Vietnam Swans Record Footy Fury!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

“Don’t read all about it!”As you may be aware, the Asian Championships will be held in Bangkok on 14 July. 10 teams from the UAE, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Bali and Jakarta shall all attend. Surely, if anyone can do anything for footy in Asia, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start.

The Vietnam Swans, through a contact, contacted the “Footy Record” back in Australia and suggested that they write a short article in the Record on the weekend of the Champs, or the week before.

Proud Swans’ SponsorsThe contact replied that, “I have floated the idea of doing a piece on the Championships in the Record with my editor, but unfortunately, he’s not too keen as it kind of goes outside the scope of what we do… Sorry I couldn’t really help.”

Euan & Bullard = 40th & 41st Confirmed Tourers

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

champs-logo.jpgToday, players Euan and Jim Bullard confirmed they were set for Bangkok – being numbers 40 and 41 respectively for the tour.

Euan has dazzling silky skills that were used to devastating effect for Saigon against Hanoi in April. Young and fit, will add depth to a team that is getting deeper by the day – until tomorrow night when applications close (apart from umpires, spectators etc).

0022.jpgPlayer Jim Bullard enters the team in the depths of darkness. Unseen by this scribe who is currently based in Saigon, this new recruit to Hanoi describes himself as “unfit” and last played footy 10 years ago. But at just 23, will have the exuberance of youth on his side – which means coming off a Friday night…

How good are the Asian Champs??

Crikey! Swans 39th tourer REDISCOVERED!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

By Crikey!Last week, the Swans Blog crossed a Rooster with a Finn. Subsequent discussions between the two seem to be bearing fruit which means the future of Finnish football could be in good hands.

Yesterday, Tim Smyth from Phnom Penh was discovered after an administrative error was exposed in Saigon when we followed up on a lonely email address in a spreadsheet marked, ”Confirmed Players for Champs”.

Today, Tim Smyth was rediscovered on the Swans Blog by a long lost mate, Stephen Mayne. By Crikey, that’s an amazing coincidence. Stephen needs him for a 20 year school reunion.

Now brace for another Crikey Coincidence: Chris Canty is a former Hanoi Swan (who doesn’t know Tim) and also works for Crikey.

free-masons.jpgEver heard of the Masonic Club? Ever heard of the Vietnam Swans Club? I’ll give you the tip; it ain’t no Crikey Coincidence that they’re both “Clubs”. Hearin’ me?

Super Savvy Scotty Stacey says, “Stop!”

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

Scotty StaceySwans Super Savvy Coach, Scotty Stacey, has called for a halt to the recruitment drive for new players. Playing a minimum of 4 matches (and a maximunm of 5 matches if we’re good enough to make it into the Grand Final), with 22 players in each match squad, means we need a maximum of just 88 players.

Of our 39 confirmed tourers, 35 are players (at A, B and C level). Additionally, the Swans still have another 3 “definite maybes” on the sidelines. That’s 35 – 38 players. Over 4 matches, we will have between 140 and 152 players available for selection for the 88 positions.

Meanwhile, the Philippines Eagles and Dubai Dingoes have also requested that some of their players join our team.

Originally, we worried whether we would have enough players to field a team. Now we have heaps – and many who “can play”. Coach Scotty is now in the enviable position of having choices in each of our matches. However, given the number of players available for the 88 positions he will be caught between the sometimes competing positions of doing what’s “best” for the team in terms of winning and doing what’s “best” for the team in terms of rewarding those guys who have done so much for the Club.

champs-logo.jpgAccordingly, the Swans have decided to cap the number of players and respectfully decline the requests from the Eagles and Dingoes to field some of their players.

Additionally, any person with claims on the Swans who has not already confirmed their availability to play, has until 11.59pm tomorrow night (Thursday 14 June) to confirm they will attend. 11.59pm will confirm our final player pool for the Champs (if one player pulls out, we could replace them with another). Of course, everyone else will be welcome to attend and umpire, spectate and support.

This is an extraordinary position for the Swans to be in. The level of interest is amazing. Three years ago, the Hanoi Swans started to dream of competing in the Champs. Recognising we didn’t have the numbers on our own, we began courting Saigon which hasn’t had a footy team in years. We also asked Marty Sharples in Laos, who has graced Dead Cat Stadium (Hanoi) with his silky skills, if he could join us to ensure we really could field a team. And it’s happened. Everyone has been getting on board. We have all needed each other to make our inaugural appearance at the Champs. It’s magnificent.

And what does Super Savvy think? I think he thinks he likes to be in the position where he can call out “Stop!”

Bring on the Champs!

Santa needn’t stop at Antti’s house this year!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

Antti, the FinnMr Rooster was able to get in contact with ex Swans player, Antti the Finn. Antti said that he would have been very keen to make it to Vienna for the CEAFL Premiership. Alas, he had already booked a “luxurious weekend next to Archipelago of Turku. Turku is the Paris of Finland… or the ass of Finland depending upon who you ask it from”, he added.

Antti was looking forward to the trip where there “will be some serious vodka drinking, drunken wrestling and passing out to the forest… which is refreshing after busy winter spring”.

Mr Reinout leaves Dead Cat for the last time. And next weekend should also be a beauty as fellow ex Swan, Mr Reinout “from the land of windmills and hash is coming”.

The Finns never sleep! See Antti’s email for more information.

39th Tourer Discovered!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

Today, the Swans were doing some spring cleaning and discovered a lonely email address on the “Players for Champs” spreadsheet. It turned out to be Tim Smyth, our 39th tourer. Tim’s not a bad find at all.

Tim’s from Phenomenal Penh, is 190cm tall, weighs 100kg and describes himself as fit – very fit and dislikes “anyone who plays and supports Carlton”.

A few of us are hearin’ him.
