Jim Beam takes the Swans night-clubbing

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 23, 2007

Have a look at the posterWith just two days before leaving Vietnam for the Asian Champs, Jim Beam and the Swans went out to HCMC’s “4 in 1″ nightclub to do a cross promotion.

The Swans were excited to be with the Swanettes again and to see our JB/Swans posters on the walls. For sure we would be the stars of the show.

What a hot womanBut then, Vietnam’s hottest woman appeared and we were in danger of being upstaged. This woman was so hot, she was on fire. Literally. At one stage she began to eat some naked flame before inviting someone from the crowd to go down on her and light a cigarette in her mouth! Seriously unheard of.

Another Jim Beam WinnerHowever, once the freak show had finished, it was time to get back to the freak sport’s fund raiser. The MC called out the winning ticket and the Swans Prez, Phil Johns, handed over the Mega Jim Beam.

The winner had a huge smile on the dial. And in the words of Bill Lawry, “Why wouldn’t he be smiling?”

Citing audio difficulties, we’re not sure exactly what the winner was saying or thinking but we strongly suspect he thought it was “Just the Best”.

The Unofficial Scores from the Champs

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 23, 2007

Ian BozThe Boz has posted a comment with what he says are the final scores for each of the Swans matches.

(The Organising Committee over in Thailand is still to forward the Official Scores from each of the matches that were played on the day.)

The Vietnam Scores according to the Boz:

1. Vietnam Vs China: 3pts – 27pts

2. Vietnam Vs Jakarta: 28pts – 45pts (Boz says this one may not be exactly correct but will be very close)

3. Vietnam Vs Bali: 19pts – 29pts

4. Vietnam Vs Thailand: 15pts – 28pts

Thanks Boz.

Newy backs the Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 23, 2007

Newy plays against the Swans at his own peril

Self confessed international football slut, Chris “Newy” Newport, who loves to play for anyone playing against the Swans (he’s played for the Thailand Tigers and Jakarta Bintangs against us), has written to us to say, “Well done on a successful tour by the Swans. The Swans have a great bunch of guys who will succeed in future years and I personally hope that you get the guernsey for the 2008 Champs”.

Newy in actionNewy goes on to add, “Great to see you guys and and I will be sure to drop into your local when I am next in Vietnam”.

Newy (who, incidentally, is pictured above getting a pasting!) is a top man and is always very welcome in Vietnam both on and off the field. We also gratefully acknowledge his confidence that we could host the Asian Champs next year.

But meanwhile, the Bali Geckos have actually floated an idea that in light of Bangkok’s central location and affordable living, it would make an ideal, permanent venue for the Champs. Hong Kong has concurred.

The beauty about footy is that it’s never over.

Stop Press: Tim Hakfoort, President of the Jakarta Bintangs has just sent an email saying “Well done to the UAE and Vietnam for joining the comp”.

Another night of entertainment for the Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 22, 2007

Socceroos in troubleLast night a number of Swans in Hanoi went out to My Dinh National Stadium to see the Soceroos face off against Japan in the quarter final of the Asian Cup.

The boys witnessed a scoreline of 1-1 after 90 minutes plus 30 minutes of extra goals. Gus McEwin is rumoured to have commented that the Bali Vs Hong Kong AFL Grand Final at the Champs last week was slightly more exciting.

Then came the mandatory “heartbreak penalty shootout” where both teams take it in turns to try and shoot fish in a barrel. Japan shot more fish and won.

Ash carried off againMeanwhile, all this was being watched on the big screen at the Green Mango Restaurant which was celebrating its 3rd birthday on Cat Ba Island. Mr Hai the owner was doing a superb job.

Mr Ashley Brooks, long time supporter of the Green Mango and the Swans was there in fine form. In the side photo, he’s seen being carried off the ground. The smart money says that with the way he was woofing down the drinks last night and the bevy of beauties circling, he may have been carried off again!

The Broadbeach Cats and Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 22, 2007

The Broadbeach CatsYou may recall the recent story about the Broadbeach Cats giving the Vietnam Swans a plug on their website.

Well, the Swans Blog has just learnt that ex Hanoi Swan, Rick Trewavas “is happy to report that Skilts (Bobby Skilton) and Barry Round (former South Melbourne ruckman) were guests of honour at the Broadbeach Cat’s recent luncheon (Roundy’s son is the captain at Broadbeach) and it was my pleasure to pick the boys up at the airport and host them for lunch.

“I’m honking – Go Swannies!”

At this stage, it’s not clear whether discussion about the Vietnam Swans dominated proceedings at the Cat’s luncheon.

Swans spoilt with choices

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 21, 2007

For the Hanoi Chapter of the Swans, we’re spoilt with choices.

On Cat Ba Island tonight, Club Sponsor, the Green Mango Restaurant is celebrating its 3rd Birthday. If you’re wearing your Swans hat, you get 10 free beers. That’s fairly fair.

Back in Hanoi, the Australian Socceroos are taking on Japan at My Dinh National Stadium in the Asia Cup. A few of the boys will go out there to see why Aussie Rules seems to have the upper hand in the popularity stakes over here.

Meanwhile, Jeff Bloom has arrived in Saigon to meet up with Super Sav… That’s sounding ugly already.

One week on from the Champs, the Swans are still going hard.

Ticker Tape Parade in Hanoi

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 20, 2007

Ticker Tape ParadeToday in Hanoi, the City turned on a magnificent show of support for the Hanoi-based Swans with a ticker tape parade.

It seemed more like a Grand Final Parade in Melbourne with the crowd up to 6 deep in places. Police estimate the crowd to have been “at least 100,000″.

Mr Nguyen, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, addressed the Swans in front of an adoring crowd. Mr Nguyen said that the Swans had captured the hearts of the nation with the mega merger of North and South to form a combined Vietnam Aussie Rules Team.

Uncle HoMr Nguyen added that until the arrival of the Vietnam Swans he had only ever wanted to watch “the beautiful game”. But now, “I think I prefer your game because it is very awesome”.

The Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee, coincidentally, also named Mr Nguyen, then presented the players with a picture of Uncle Ho.

Jezza says: “Wins guaranteed” for Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 20, 2007

Jez picks up an award of the Bintangs for being one of our best, March 2006Every Club has its staunch supporters and the Swans are no different. Yesterday, the Vietnam Swans received an email from Jeremy Palmer who has played one game for the Swans – last year when we recorded our first victory which was against the Jakarta Bintangs.

Jez played a key role in that victory and we did try hard to tempt him to play with us again in the Champs. Unfortunately, work commitments in the Middle East prevented him from joining us. His email follows:

Bloody spewing I couldn’t come! Next year, we’ll clock up our first couple of wins guaranteed. Great work by all of you boys.

As I continue to tell people, despite all the footy I played on Australian soil, the game I played with the Swans was still the most enjoyable football experience I have had. The sheer enthusiasm of the boys and the fact that everyone was great mates off the field just makes it impossible not to enjoy a Swans experience.

Great game, great blokes…

Jez

Go Jez and Go Swannies!

Chinese blog knocks off Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 20, 2007

Xu JingleiIn unheard of news, it’s been announced that Ms Xu Jinglei, a former Chinese actress and now director has just become the world’s most widely read blogger notching up 100 million page views in the last 600 days.

This makes her blog even more popular than the Vietnam Swans blog which has recorded more than 1,700 hits in the past 13 days.

According to an article in The Age, Xu “who has a reputation for a high intellect and integrity, has done it without writing about sex or providing a catalogue of kiss and tell stories – but focusing on her work and day to day life.”

Interestingly, these are the hallmarks of the Swans Blog.

Only 99,995,271 hits to catch up to Ms Xu.

In other news, Sex Kitten tells of wild, all-night sex romp on yacht under Harbour Bridge…

Match 3: Vietnam Vs Bali Geckos

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 19, 2007

Will goes over the topFinal Score: ??

With Bali always the favorite in our group, nobody expected, except the Swannies of course, that this would be anything but an easy match for the Geckos. How wrong they were as once again the Swannies came out firing on all guns.

Johnny DominatorEggins tucks it under his armThe coaches rested a few big names knowing that we still had a tough run home against the host nation but more importantly found some new positions for some of the boys to show off some hidden talents.

Big Growds and Marty Sharples dropped back into defense and found their comfort zone for sure. Drew took up the centre half forward role and was an immediate target and huge help for Dan who brought his sterling form into his second match of the day. Johnny simply dominated the ruck and his effort allowed Sam, Mick and Greg to win about 90% of the clearances as the Swans easily took the first half.

A shell shocked Bali were in tatters and needed to pull out something in the second half. Their tactics were to take out Sam’s midfield dominance by antagonizing this innocent young man into an uncharacteristic poke at a Bali hard man. Unfortunately Sammies haymaker came all the way from Hanoi so the ump decided he needed a rest in the bin. This was Bali’s chance and they came out pounding the Swannies goals.

Mick says, “My ball”Fantastic pressure from our solid backline of Kris, Scotty B, Damo and Will forced the Gecko’s to miss a few and kept the Swannies in it right to the end but once again, the Gecko’s were another opponent of Vietnam that were able to just fall over the line. A fantastic effort from our boys against a team that drew in the Grand Final.

Best Players: Martin, Marty Sharples, Eggins, Franklin, Gowing, Vandermeer

Goal Kickers:??

A Swan amongst the Cats

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 19, 2007

Mick Francis in the Bobby Skilton Room, HanoiYou may remember the story last week that mentioned former Hanoi Swan Rick Trewavas being the inspiration behind the naming of the Bobby Skilton Club Rooms in Hanoi (see the side photo with a younger looking Micky Francis).

Well, Rick has written in with a link to a story that appeared on the website of Queensland’s Broadbeach Cats regarding the 8th Annual Asian Championships.

The Broadbeach CatsThe Swans scored a special mention:

Commencing in Bangkok 14 July the 8th Annual Aussie Rules Championships offers some interest. The Competing Teams in 2007 China, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia-Jakarta, Vietnam (First appearance – go the Hanoi Swans), Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia-Bali.
As an example of commitment, there are 39 Vietnam Swans players and 5 spectators/officials with supporters coming from: Hanoi, Saigon, Laos, Cambodia, Tianjin, Singapore, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

Honk yer horn if you love footy.
