Swans unveil “2007 AFL Grand Final Party” Banner

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 22, 2007

It’s enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand upWith just 7 days before the 2007 AFL Grand Final Party in Hanoi, the Vietnam Swans today unveiled the Official Banner. The banner which captures the feel of the event and displays the logos of sponsors in a very innovative manner was designed by duografikmedia who have offered the Vietnam Swans outstanding support.

For those in Hanoi on Thursday, 27th September, you may well see the banner when the Swans hold their 2nd Annual Grand Final Cyclo Parade. The Swans and Friends (everyone is welcome to be a friend) will meet at Le Pub, jump into cyclos dressd in team colours and set off on a Pub Crawl with a difference – it will include a drop at our Gold Sponsor, Red Apron’s Wine Store at the Metropole.

Full details will be announced on the Blog and at Le Pub “imminently” said an anonymous Club spokesperson.

How high are the hairs standing on the back of your neck? The Swans have been told the back of our necks looks more like that of an echidna! Unheard of.

Swans Satellite Slows Swans Star Tipster

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 21, 2007

Swans SatelliteThe much vaunted Swans satellite has come under fire today after Swans Super Tipster, Chris Batchelor was out of Hanoi on assignment – and wasn’t able to lodge his tips and special comments prior to the Geelong – Collingwood Preliminary Grand Final. “A hunka space junka”, critics are claiming.

At 8.35am local time, Batchelor sent an sms through to the Swans Blog saying “in Lang Son til Friday. Hopefully back for footy. No internet so could you put Geelong and Port as the good oil in the blog. Thxs (sic). GO PIES!”

Alas, the Blog could not find the server. Priceless tips gone begging.

At 1.06pm local time, Batchelor found access to the email. But the rest of us were still trying to find the server. Barely, 9 hours later, we can now report:

Batchelor’s BackSTOP PRESS – From somewhere up North

Fellow Tipsters,

Thankfully this week’s footy tips are what the experts call “no brainers”.

I say thankfully as I’m up north in Lang Son with a bunch of no hoper Europeans who have never heard the word, “Sherrin” nor grasped the idea of anything else but a round ball. So to be brief, I’ll be backing Geelong to roll the Maggies by a massive 50 points. Attendance at the bounce 85,207; by 3/4 time 1,700 (that idiot Joffa and the rest of the Pie fans will have left in disgust by then).

First Goal, Gary Ablett. BOG, Gary Ablett

For Saturday’s game, put your ex wife’s house on Port scraping home in a close game against the dour Roos. Attendance: 61,987. First Goal, Warren Tredrea. BOG, Chad Cornes.

Happy Punting.

Next week the Big One.

Cheers, Chris

Swans Engineers are currently checking the technology to ensure there is no repeat of today’s fiasco on Grand Final Day.

Fred doesn’t say a single word.

At the end of the over, a nervous Row ambles past Trueman and apologises sheepishly.

“So should’ve your fu*king mother!” said Trueman.

“Rooster wins German Flag”, reports Rooster

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 19, 2007

The Rooster is backIn Breaking News from 1 September, our early morning friend, Mr Rooster has recently and selflessly reported, “Rooster wins German Flag”.

The match was also won by the Rheinland Lions over the very strong and very Australian Munich. Rooster says the Lions are “mostly German, and our best players are all German…  the Aussies are too old.”

The victorious Rheinland Lions“This was the toughest match of footy that I have ever played in Europe…  the ground was full size (at least as full size as the SCG is), and the pressure and tackling was amazing… the crunching tackles were relentless with some of our German players showing real footy nouse.

“The win took place on September 1st in Koln, Germany…  just 5 years and 1 day since I lead the Lions onto the paddock for the first time in Dusseldorf when we hosted a tournament at the end of August 2002.”

For more background info, check out the Rooster update.

Finally, Rooster concludes… “By the way, it’s about time I had my own category on your blog too”.

Taber Talk – Part 2 of the Semi Finals

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 17, 2007

Taber TalksThe hard hitting and opinionated Taber returns for his review of the Hawthorn – Kangaroos Semi Final on the weekend.

What a Boomer is Harvey

The Hawthorn brainstrust got one thing right. They figured the danger man for them was Brent Boomer Harvey and he was treated savagely right from the very beginning of this somewhat disappointing match.

Harvey was verballed, bumped and crunched at every opportunity. At half time the Hawks didn’t let up escorting him nearly all the way to the dugout.Harvey dominated (photo: The Age)

But when push came to shove, the little pocket dynamo overcame the harsh treatment meted out to him and gave his all to get his team over the line. In a low scoring contest, Harvey booted four second-half goals.

Another Roo that had a big impact was Aaron Edwards who was playing in the VFL this time a year ago. He covered for the absence of the injured Corey Jones well by also booting four goals and taking a contender for mark of the year.

Several other unheralded Kangaroos were excellent.

The defenders and taggers deserve a mention as many big guns for the Hawks just didn’t fire. The Arch was great also and his career lives on for at least one more week.

It was a great turnaround in form for the Roos after being shellacked by the Cats by 106 points in the qualifying final the week before.

Taber Talk – Part 1 of the Semi Finals

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 17, 2007

Taber Talks

The hard hitting and opinionated Taber has returned (late!) with a review of the weekend’s semi finals. Controversially, he has adopted a new format – without asking anyone – which has placed an inordinate amount of pressure on the Swans Blog to Run the Taber Talk over two parts. Cocky bastard.

Magpies Do Extra Well After Scores Level at Full Time

We all know footy’s a team game. My reports of late have had a focus on individuals and again it is so. Come finals cometh the man, or more to the point for this review, the men.

On Friday night the Magpies met an Eagles outfit weakened by injuries to Judd, Kerr and Cousins. It’s the 2nd time ever extra time has been needed to decide a winner in a Final.

In a memorable match the Magpies kicked 3.3 to two behinds in the two five-minute periods after full-time to win 13.15 (93) to 10.14 (74).

A critical factor in the outcome of this game was the decision of Eagles coach, John Worsfold, to rest full back, Darren Glass, late in the 3rd term. Glass had been virtually impassable at full back repelling almost every ball coming in his zone. Resting him opened the door for the Pies. Travis Cloke goaled and Rocca took full advantage of Glass’ absence, kicking two goals from strong marks. This got the Magpies back in a contest they eventually deserved to win.

Another unusual element to this game were the errors made by the reliable pair of Buckley and Clement.

Good signs for Collingwood were the young guns standing tall in the end and the 38 possessions by the unnoticeable workaholic, Dane Swan (Ed’s note: how good are the Swans?).

The night also continued the extraordinary finals history between these two teams, following their draw in 1990 (Collingwood won the replay under the old system) and a two-point win to the Eagles in 1992.

COLLINGWOOD – 13.15 (93) def WEST COAST  10.14 (74)

Did the Pies just win the flag??

Bloods Rule in Vietnam; Blood Rules in Oz?

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 16, 2007

Johnsy - Bleeds for the ClubWith much of the interest gone from the AFL Finals this year following Hawthorn’s shock loss to the Kangaroos last night, it’s time to focus on something else that matters in our lives. Trivia.

The Swans blog has already revealed a “plethora of Johnsies” who are brushing past our Club: Swans President – Phil Johnsy. New Saigon Super Recruit: Matt Johnsy. Goal umpire at the Hong Kong Dragons match: Biggles (the author of the Biggles Books is Capt. WE Johnsy). Then of course, from rugby, we’ve had Andrew Johnsy in the news saying that he was always drugged up during his playing career.

Last week, the Blackburn Football Club in Melbourne put out their weekly newsletter with a picture (reproduced above) of Graz Johnsy with blood gushing everywhere – specifically, over his forearm. The caption on the photo says, Last round action: With Johnsy prepared to bleed for the Club, let’s hope we can get more members, more sponsors, more supporters and more wins for season 2008.

The Swans blog believes there’s a fair bit more to this story than just a flippant caption. Much more. The beauty is that Johnsy will be jetting into Hanoi for the Vietnam Swans AFL Grand Final Party on 29 September which means we’ll be able to ask him ourselves what really happened. Gee, imagine if the hard-hitting and opinionated Taber gets a crack at him. Could be some real fireworks as we seek to find out, among other things, a) is the blood Johnsy’s? b) was the Blood Rule invoked? and c) etc.

Gee whiz, two weeks out from the Grand Final Party and we’ve all ready got high drama. It’s shaping up to be one of the all-time classic Parties.

MCC President “personally disappointed”

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 16, 2007

Melbourne Cricket Club President, David MeiklejohnOn the eve of the footy finals, the President of the Melbourne Cricket Club, Mr David Meiklejohn, wrote to all MCC members to advise that he was “personally disappointed”.

Mr Meiklejohn said that there had been ”several disturbing incidents involving unruly behaviour and inappropriate language in the Members’ Reserve (of the MCG) in recent times. These incidents, some of which are still under investigation, have caused significant discomfort for members and visitors and detracted from their enjoyment of the event.

“…Finally, it has also come to the Club’s attention that visitor tickets and entry entitlements sold to members are appearing for sale on unauthorised websites such as Ebay.

“This is against our rules…”

When asked to respond to the above deplorable situation, the Vietnam Swans President advised that he was “personally, very disappointed that Hawthorn lost the semi final last night.”

Hearin’ a herd of Elephants in Hanoi

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 15, 2007

It’s official: The Laos Elephants will tour to Hanoi and play against the Vietnam Swans and Thailand Tigers in a 3-way tournament on Saturday, 17 November in Hanoi.

The Swans sent our official photographer, Iva Biggin, to Laos to capture the reaction of the Elephants. As you can see from the photograph, the Elephants were very excited to hear that they would be playing in their first international tournament.

Bill Lawry“And why wouldn’t you be excited?” asks Bill Lawry. ”It’ll be the first international to be played in Hanoi since March of last year, the first time the ‘Vietnam Swans’ have ever played in Hanoi, the first time the Elephants have ever fielded a team and the first time the Tigers have been seen in Vietnam since November 2005. I’m as excited as an Elephant right now”.

Thailand Tigers Coach, Mr Fish has said that the Tigers will put up the Burke-Roos Cup for the tournament. The Swans and Tigers have played for the Cup twice and both times it Fish and the Burke-Roos Cuphas fallen into the hands of the Tigers. The Swans will be keen to redress that situation in November.

Fish is a supporter of a tournament without a Grand Final… “Given how well the Swans host (a tournament) and how well the Tigers take advantage of Hanoi as good hosts, let’s keep it to two games each and then top of ladder wins tournament”.

Fish could be a lawyer for Grand Final Platinum Sponsor, Allens Arthur Robinson. He presents a very convincing and succinct case.
