Where are they now?

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 15, 2007

Where are they now?Upon the suggestion of Mr Sam Grigg, from today, the Swans will kick off a segment called, “Where are they now?”.

This segment will look at former players, officials, groupies etc who were somehow associated with the Swans (so long as they’re not associated with the Wherethefakawi Tribe).

It would be unheard of-ly good if you could write a short profile of your favourite player and email it through to the Vietnam Swans (vietnamswans@gmail.com) for publication on this website. if you could include a photo, that would make it even more awesome.

Swans help raise more for charity

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 12, 2007

The Swans donate some Jim Beam at Spam ChamA couple of weeks ago, JASPAS in Saigon held it’s monthly Spam Cham which involves drinks, nibblies and a raffle. All money raised goes to the Loreto Vietnam Australia Program which is involved in 9 major projects assisting over 3,000 of Vietnam’s neediest children. The program assists disadvantaged, disabled and poor children through education.

Thanks to the Vietnam Swans amazing sponsor, Jim Beam, the Vietnam Swans were able to donate the equivalent of a mega 4.5 litre Jim Beam bottle (6 standard bottles) to the raffle.

Tim, the winner of the Jim Beam and Albin, winner of Movember

The winner of the Jim Beam was Tim who exclaimed, “You Beauty!” – although he later confessed he was actually going for the two cans of Spam… Until that moment, Tim had “never won anything”.

Tim said that he was going to Mui Ne the following weekend with a few friends and his new friend, Jim. He did not expect Jim to make the return trip back to Saigon.

For the record, Albin’s effort at growing a mo for Movember earnt him the title of Mr Movember.

Royal Ivanhoe Golf Links, MelbourneThe list of attendees for the 2007 Vietnam Swans Annual Golf Classic (4th day of the Boxing Day Test Match, the 29th December), in Melbourne is shaping up as a real “Who’s Who” of the Swans.

Former Presidents Daryl “Smooth” Taber and Dave “Flyer” Kainey (and a mate) will be there with current Prez, Phil “Fabbo” Johns (will the golf course be big enough for their three egos?). Also coming are Chris “Snags” Canty, Ryan “Organiser” Jeffrey, Clint “Bar Fly” Bryant and from memory, the Lady Killer, Willer Martin.

This list will grow much longer and stronger. Stay tuned.

If you want to come along, email the Swans to register your interest.

Taber’s Farewell Party and Swans Golf

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 12, 2007

Club NewsOn the 20th December, the Vietnam Swans will farewell another of the best, Daryl “Smooth” “DT” Taber. Daryl will make like a bird and flock off from Vivacious Vietnam with his fabulous family for the serenity of Mundane Bris-bane.

As you will be aware, DT is a teacher and on this occasion – fair to say - he’s teaching the rest of us not what to do.

Be that as it may, if you’re in Hanoi on Thursday, you need to attend his farewell bash which will be at:

Where: The Green Mango Restaurant (a Club Sponsor), 18 Hang Quat Street, Hanoi

When: Thursday 13 December from 6.30pm

Who: Whoever wants to pay homage to a Carlton supporter

If you’re not in Hanoi, don’t stress. You will have a second crack at farewelling DT in Melbourne at the 3rd Annual Vietnam Swans Golf Classic:

Where: Royal Ivanhoe Golf Links, Melbourne

When: 4th Day of the Boxing Day Test Match (29 December) at a tee off time tba

Who: Whoever wants to pull their own golf sticks around 18 holes

How do you register: Email vietnamswans@gmail.com

Rooster wants to be a Swan

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 11, 2007

Taber has loads of time as Matty Johns takes care of the RoosterSelf confessed international footy slut, the Rooster has written to the Swans to declare that he is available for selection in the match against the Malaysian Warriors on 8 March 2008 – so long as it doesn’t clash with any of his Singapore Wombats commitments.

It must be said that in Asian Footy, you do meet some characters…

Rooster, a handball behind the play in the photo above, has a serious footy fetish having played for 19 different international teams.

The Swans have advised Rooster that his application will be considered by various committees and sub committees before a final decision can be made.

Ottawa Swans spark “It’s time” debate

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 10, 2007

The Ottawa SwansWorld Footy News has reported that Canada’s Ottawa Swans Australian Football Club will compete in the Ontario Football League from 2008.

As you can see from the picture to the side, their jumper is decidedly similar to the Vietnam Swans. Instead of having the Sydney Opera House which is on our jumper, Ottawa has a maple leaf.

Just as Gough Whitlam back in 1972 was saying, “It’s time”, so too are some of the Vietnam Swans with regard to our jumper. As we saw in the Asian Champs, Singapore wears the South Melbourne jumper (red “V”). Japan also has a red and white jumper.

The Lao Elephants jumperThe Sydney Swans jumper has served us well but now it’s time to come up with a new design which is uniquely Vietnam. The Lao Elephants have done a top job with their jumpers (especially if you like pink) because it’s unique.

Agree or disagree that it’s time for a new jumper? If you agree, what design should it be? Post a comment below.

Swans blog cruises through 15,000 hits

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 10, 2007

Swans Blog cruises through 15,000 hitsLast week the Swans Blog cruised through 15,000 hits. A club spokesman described the feat as unprecedented. He also pointed out that the 15,000 hits had come since May when the Blog was launched.

It is remarkable, extraordinary and unheard of, the same spokesperson added.

Bali Geckos want Saigon Tour

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 9, 2007

Swans’ Will Martin takes on the Bali Geckos at this year’s Asian ChampsThe Bali Geckos have expressed a strong interest to take on the Vietnam Swans in Saigon in either April or May next year. Bring it on.

While the tour is yet to be confirmed, suitable dates are currently being explored.

If the tour proceeds, imagine the confusion when the Bali Geckos land in Saigon where the Saigon Geckos Rugby Club is well established! While the 2 Gordon Geckos squabble over who was called “Gecko” first, watch the Swannies kick goal after goal.

A cunning plan. Hearin me?

Home grown heroes

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 8, 2007

JD - the Swans most successful coach everAt the Tri Nations Tournament, the Swans recorded their second victory ever. “An historic win for the boys”, commented Super Star Coach, Jarrod Dale.

When the Swans beat the Lao Elephants to record their second win, it also notched up Jarrod’s second victory as Coach for the Swans giving him the perfect score of 2 wins from 2 games coached.

Deep within the inner sanctum of the Swans hierarchy,  he is apparently being hailed as the greatest since Jock McHale.

Below are the soldiers who brought glory and fame to the Swans. Each of them a hero. Each of them brought up at home.

Victorious!

Pacey Stacey runs rings around Angkor Wat

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 7, 2007

Stacey!Last weekend Pacey Stacey tried one of those fun runs at Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. He had to run 21km.

Not only was he successful in completing the run, he also managed to pulverise the 2 hour barrier. Scott finished in just 1hr and 59 minutes!

There’s a lot to be said for the Swans fitness regime.

Special thanks to Stacey for doing the official timing for himself.

3rd Annual Swans Golfing Day, Melbourne

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 1, 2007

The 4th day of the Boxing Day Test Match

Today is the first day of December which means there is only 28 more days to go before the 3rd Annual Vietnam Swans Golfing Day. It will be held in Melbourne on the 4th day of the Boxing Day Test Match (29 December).

By the 4th day of the Australia - New Zealand Test Match, interest in our Annual Golf Day should be palpable. Already big names to have registered their interest include two former presidents of the Swans: Kainey and Taber. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard from the Annual Golf Day’s Founding Father, Ryan (2nd from left in above photo) for a long time. That’s very unfortunate because each year he invites us back to his place for some of the best hamburgers you will ever taste!

The golf day will be held at Royal Ivanhoe Golf Course in… Ivanhoe, Melbourne. It’s an exclusive event where absolutely everyone is more than welcome to attend.

To register your interest in attending, please email the Swans at www.vietnamswans.com
