Swans hat discovered at Phillip Island

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 8, 2008

Swans’ Hat discovered at Phillip IslandLast week, the Swans Blog was down at Phillip Island in Victoria. The Blog visited the Phillip Island race track - the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix – and unexpectedly stumbled across a Swans hat tied to the perimeter fence. Unheard of, amazing and unbelievable.

The discovery of the Swans hat in such a place gives added weight to suspicions that our hats are spreading further and faster than a nest of randy rabbits!

Phillip Island will host the 2008 Grand Prix and Superbikes in March.

London Swans invite Vietnam Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 6, 2008

The London SwansThe Vietnam Swans have just received an email from the London Swans. In short, if you are going to London, you are more than welcome to join the London Swans (the email has been reproduced below).

Hi Vietnam Swans,

I got your email off a website that lists Australian Rules Football Clubs.

I am Recruitment Manager of The Swans Australian Rules Football Club – one of the founding clubs in the British Australian Rules Football League (BARFL).  We have teams based in London and in Brighton, UK.  We also have links to a Ladies Gaelic Football Club based in London.  We have a great club atmosphere, proud players and are always looking to make the game bigger here in the UK and globally.

As such, we are looking to establish links with other Footy Clubs worldwide and in particular Swans Footy Clubs!

So if any of the lads (or the ladies) heading to London and want a great place to start London life, the Swans always welcome new players and can help provide a welcoming base to get amongst European Adventures and enjoy playing footy in the UK.

Best Wishes and a Happy New Year

Peter Cridland

A proposal for a new Vietnam footy jumper

A proposal for a new footy jumper
Kevan Dacey has submitted a proposal for a new Vietnam jumper (see above). Importantly, it has room for sponsors’ logos on the front and the back. What do you think? Post a comment.
The Blog’s understanding of the laws in Vietnam is that we would need to get formal approval from the government if we are to have the Vietnam flag on our jumper.

Movember Money donated for prostate screening

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 3, 2008

Mick Johnston (left), Dr Thang and Dr Judith LadinskyAt the Tri Nations Tournament held in Hanoi in November 2007, the Swans raffled off a 4.5 liter mega bottle of Jim Beam as part of Movember. The footballers and netballers from Vietnam, Thailand and Laos raised 5 million Vietnamese Dong (USD 300). The Swans’ Micky Johnston, explains what was done with the money.

Attached is the photo of the handover of 5,000,000 VND to Dr Judith Ladinsky, Chair of the non-governmental organization, the U.S. Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam and Laos. The money was raised by the Vietnam Swans, Laos Elephants and Thailand Thaigers players, netballers and supporters at JAFA Restaurant (after the Tri Nations Tournament)  towards the funding of prostate screening in Viet Nam. Currently, this is not a program that is conducted regularly, but prostate cancer will become a growing issue as the male demographic of Viet Nam gets older.

The money was handed over at the office of Dr Thang, head of the Institute of Research into HIV, which is one of the many projects funded under Dr Ladinsky’s Committee. Information about a recent award from the Vietnamese Government can be read at http://hanoi.usembassy.gov/pr071207.html

Dr Ladinsky was extremely surprised to receive the money.  Dr. Thang had not told her of the reason for my visit.  Needless to say, the Swans hope to continue to raise funds and Dr Ladinsky looks forward to working with her Committee to commence the prostate screening program.
