The Dubai Dingoes join Pies’ sisterhood

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 10, 2008

Dingoes & Magpies become sister clubsYesterday, the NAB pre season competition kicked off in Dubai with the Adelaide Crows crunching the Magpies by 81 points. The curtain raiser to that match was the Dubai Dingoes against the Dubai Heat (which played in last year’s Asian Champs). As yet, we are still to find out who won that match.

We can report however that, according to 7 Days (which the Swans Blog suspects is a Dubai newspaper), the Magpies invited the Dingoes to become one of their sister clubs.

Eddie kicks an off field goal with the Dubai PaisCollingwood has similar sister club relationships with clubs in London and New York. The Magpies Marketing Director, David Emerson, is quoted in 7 Days as saying, “We come to Dubai quite a lot as we are sponsored by Emirtaes… Whether it’s simply providing equipment or helping with coaching, we’re glad to support (the Dingoes) as they look to boost the sport here in the UAE.”

If Eddie McGuire’s Magpies are such shockers on the field, howcome they are so good off the field?? As a Kiwi once remarked, “It doesn’t make sinse (sic)”.

Swans hat seen in Sorrento

Swans hat seen in Sorrento

The Swans Blog has received a photograph of one of our hats in Sorrento, outside of Melbourne. On the left, we have the Sorrento back beach. On the right, we have the Sorrento front beach. Unheard of-ly clever names! The beaches are separated by a slender 3km piece of the Mornington Peninsula.

A Club spokesman refused to comment further on the sighting of the Swans hat.

Swans Blog Spikes

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 7, 2008

Heath Ledger’s untimely departure fuels DVD salesWhen Heath Ledger accidentally took an unexpectedly lethal cocktail of just 6 prescription drugs that included pain killers, anxiety medication and sleeping pills, sales of his DVDs soared (see Video stores hit by demand).

On Tuesday, the Swans Blog spiked with a world beating 300 hits exactly, in a single day. Our previous best was 236 hits which occurred at the time of the 2007 Asian Championships.

But what was driving Terrific Tuesday? Unlike the increase in sales of Heath’s DVDs, we’re not really sure. However, 117 people found our website by looking for “ticker tape parade” which took them to Ticker Tape Parade in Hanoi, dated 20 July 2007. The story focussed on the parade to welcome back the Hanoi contingent of the Swans after returning from the Asian Champs.

Unheard of reason to explain the spike.

Pago’s word on the Jumper

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 5, 2008

Pago reflects on the new footy jumper with the support of Club sponsors, Jim Beam and Tiger BeerThe Swans Blog has received an email from the President of the Saigon Geckos’ Rugby Club regarding the proposal for a new footy jumper. Pago, who is an original member of the Saigon Saints, has been instrumental in resurrecting Aussie Rules in Saigon by offering the resources and players from the Geckos as well as some well received advice. Pago also toured to Bangkok for the Vietnam Swans’ inaugural assault on the Asian Champs last year where his on-field performance was solid and his off-field session as “Fines Master” was exemplary!

As the last surviving playing member of the Saigon Saints, can I please have some input when you guys decide the jersey.

The Saints formed in 1999 and at last count there are still 12 ex players residing in Saigon (who unfortunately, “are too old now to play”). I am sure that the club will get more support if it tries to keep some part of the history of Aussie Rules in Saigon alive, rather than just changing to something completely different.

I believe we have tracked down some of the old (St Kilda) jerseys too, and have enough for a team.

I propose that whatever design is decided that we try to incorporate the red, white and black. Not necessarily in equal proportions like St Kilda but however fits best. I also propose that on the neck of the jersey we have SSFC as other merged clubs do such as Sydney/South Melbourne (SMFC), Brisbane/Fitzroy BBFLFC), etc.

Footnote:

Pago added in a subsequent email, “All good for Hanoi to stay as the Swans, Saigon the Saints and then a combined Vietnam jersey.” He also said he has a photograph of the original Saigon Saints team which will be forwarded through shortly to the Blog.

The Rooster’s latest design for a new jumper

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 4, 2008

A photo of a platypus rumoured to be a dead ringer of the one discovered back in 1797 near the Hawkesbury RiverThe Big Rooster is back in town with renewed enthusiasm and a revised design for a new Vietnam jumper.

Swannies, what about this concept !!! If it is ever seen back in Australia, it would create more of a stir than when the first platypus was sent back to Blightie !!!

It covers all of the aspects that Sam mentioned (read Sam’s post)… the colours from the NLF flag, the South VN flag with the 3 red lines etc. etc… It also maintains the link to the team being the Swans… there is something for Sydney-siders, Adelaidians and Melbourne Eurotrash Wanna-be’s (Ed’s note: steady-on re the Magnificent Melbournians)… It also acknowledges the Saigon Saints Hanoi Swans and Hanoi Hawks Football Clubs…  (much like the BBFFC Brisbane Bears Fitzroy Football Club). The Rooster’s latest proposed jumper for the Swans

Note how I cleverly incorporate a sneaky reference to the current Vietnam flag !!!

This jumper is also not going to clash with any other Asian teams. Malaysia is a lighter blue and you also have the red stripes at the bottom.

Whilst totally unique jumpers are great, there is a school of thought that supports jumpers that maintain a tangible link to an AFL jumper… When Adelaide play at the MCG this year, somebody is more likely to wear such a jumper (Ed’s Note: But only if you’re a pumpkin-head Adelaide supporter) rather than the Laos Elephants’ jumper for example. So you will get noticed and the profile of VN footy will improve which is important (when I was living in Jakarta, we had an ex-AFL player living there for 18 months before he found us !!!).  Any publicity is good publicity.

I am definitely coming up for March 8th to kick a few goals (with the Vietnam Swans against the Malaysian Warriors).

Agree or disagree with the jumper proposal? Post a comment and build upon the Big Rooster’s 6-goal contribution!

Houston, we have a glitch…

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 4, 2008

Vietnam Airlines - Running out of spaceAs we keep hearing every moment of every day, Vietnam is an emerging market enjoying unprecedented growth. The aviation sector is no exception.

Vietnam News recently reported that:

Vietnam Airlines plans to buy almost 50 new planes in the next 10 years while Pacific Airlines (part owned by Qantas) will add 30 more planes.

There’s a glitch, though. There isn’t enough room on the tarmac for them.

Unheard of! Meanwhile, the Swans Blog has learnt that a high profile Swans Man was recently upgraded to Seat 1K on his return flight back from Melbourne to Vietnam. When asked why they had done that, he replied. “Not sure. But I was wearing my Vietnam Swans t-shirt.”

Coincidence or not?

Swans Blog smashes through 20,000 hits

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 3, 2008

The Blog’s StatsLast week, the Swans Blog smashed through its 20,000th hit. Since then, we’ve recorded another 700 hits.

In what has been a bumper month for the Swans Blog, January had 3,279 hits which is a world record. Our previous best month was July last year when we had 3,271. What’s weird about that is that July was the month of the Asian Championships. January, by contrast, was the month of not very much!

In the last 20 days, 12 days have had more than 100 hits. If you include days that had more than 90 hits, the number goes up to 17. Seriously unheard of.

The Swans Blog has attracted an international audience. Staggeringly, the United States accounts for 28 per cent of our traffic; Australia has 22 per cent and Vietnam comes in at No. 3 with 19 per cent of the hits. Often, the Blog is difficult to access in Vietnam. Many times we can’t access it during the day at all which may explain why Vietnam doesn’t come in at No. 1.

If you have your own theory to explain these results, post a comment.

Swans Footy Update

Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 3, 2008

Read all about it!To celebrate the Tet Lunar New Year, here’s the latest Tommy on the Tet Vietnam Swans update. Delivered to your computer laces up. Awesome.

Footy trip to Malaysia – On Thursday evening, the G Train – who loves his Weet Bix and his footy – was the E Train Express. He didn’t stop at any station and nor did he take any prisoners as he made an impassioned recruitment plea for more numbers for the upcoming tour to Malaysia. In just four weeks from today, Saturday 8 March, the Vietnam Swans will tour to Kuala Lumpur to take on the Malaysian Warriors. So far we have 15 players. A few more would be sensational.

Malaysia is speeeecial to us and some of the old timers around the Club are likely to shed a tear or two when we return. Our tour to Malaysia in 2005 was our first ever. That’s history. It’s also history that we have played Malaysia twice and been unlucky twice. Time we made our own luck and win one back!

If you can join us and haven’t already confirmed, please email Gus at gusmcewin@yahoo.com.au . We might be able to get a special deal on Malaysia Airlines but for those in Hanoi, if you can get a cheaper Air Asia flight, book it yourselves now! We will advise re hotels shortly.

Vung Tau Training Trip - On 15 – 17 Feb, 11 people from the HCMC contingent of the Swans will go to Vung Tau for footy training, the “dish lickers” (the Saturday night dog races – where rather than the dogs chasing the rabbit, the chef with the butcher’s knife chases the dogs. Hearin’ me?) and golf. It should be an awesome weekend.

To confirm attendance, please email Clint Muzza at cmurrell76@gmail.com

Swannies star in Hanoi on Australia Day – The Hanoi boys put on a magnificent show last Saturday for Australia Day at the Melia Hotel. We were invited by Australia Education International and the Embassy to showcase Aussie Rules. Footies, banners, DVDs… it was all happening.

On a side note, the smells in the room were awesome as there was also a cooking demonstration before and after our segment for lamingtons and pavlova. Tasty. Apparently the day was a big success.

Thanks to the Swans who helped out – and a special mention to Micky J who did much of the organization.

Wayne “Bubbles” Tinlin departs – After nearly 10 years in the job of trying to make sense of Vietnam and lifting the Swans to ever greater heights, Bubbles has called it a day. He returned to Australia for good on Friday. But he has assured us he will continue to fly the flag for us back home.

So long, farewell and see you back in Oz. It was great fun for the rest of us to be a part of Wayne’s World.

Sponsorship – Drew Franklin is doing a magnificent job at hunting down sponsors for the Club. We hope to announce some good news very soon.

Footy jumpers – Ideas are still being tossed around about a new design for the Swans jumpers. We hope to announce some good news very soon. People are still adding their two cents worth on the Blog.

If you have an idea, record it!

At the beginning, middle and end of the day, it’s all good.
