A new recruit to the Swans family!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 18, 2008

Ed and kate at the Warmhouse Orphanage, HanoiMr Ed and Kate Smith have downsized!

That’s right. Previously, the then Hanoi Swans were actively involved in supporting the Warmhouse Orphanage in Hanoi. We would go to the Orphanage and start off kicking the footy before the kids would force us to kick the soccer ball! It was great fun – and leading the charge always were Mr Ed and Kate Smith. They really enjoyed being with a very extended family!

Kate, Meg and Mr EdEd and Kate have since returned to Tassie. The Swans Blog is proud to announce that they have successfully downsized from heaps to one. On Mother’s Day, 11 May 2008, Kate gave birth to Ms Meg – “(E)M” for short. Ed describes it all as the perfect Mother’s Day present. Ms Em “weighs in at a hefty 8.8lbs and is stacking on the kgs”.

Attached are some photos of Ed, Kate and Meg (interesting to note that Ed has found a new use for the esky). Also, attached are some photos of Ed and Kate at the Warmhouse Orphanage.

Mr Ed - Nostalgia - Same shirt, different times and locationsBut how are Ed and Kate coping with life after the Swans? Ed explains, “We still love getting all of the mighty Swans emails. Sounds like the Swans are having a pretty busy year – makes me nostalgic. We had such a great time with you guys.”

Given the shirt Ed is wearing with Em appears to be the same shirt he was wearing at the Orphanage, we’re hearin’ him when he says he’s feelin’ nostalgic. Hearin’ me?

Congtaulations Ed, Kate and Em – from all the Vietnam Swannies.

The Tipstar strikes back – Rounds 5,6 and 7

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 13, 2008

Sorry for the delay lads - its been 3 action packed weeks since the last post and there has been plenty happening. Lets get into it!

Round 5 – What can I say, “The Stray” – brained the lot of us – the only bloked to get 8! A clear winner – take some time to check out the cracking photo of the Mighty Joe on the footytips.com site. Daylight to everyone else – Damo and the Vietnam Swans, not so Fabo with 3.

Round 6 –  what a week a difference makes in tipping – Tipstars all round.  8 got 8. G Train Gus, A Wall, Troggs, Deesboy, Chris B, Tony M (not Boney M), RS (Rory) and the out and out winner – Jason Dunstall Walks on Water.  Almost could be called a “Bevy or a Wedge” of Swannies – look it up, apparently that is the term for a group of Swans – bevy who would have thought!

Round 7 – much tougher this round – for some. Fabo Phil, Damo, Snags and Mark Procter (all with 3)- bit early to start tanking – especially considering there is no last prize in this elite comp. Consistancy coming though with Rory S taking the chocolates with a game margin of 5(eye). Deesboy, Uncle Crow and Be Careful all starting to make their move up the ladder. Speaking of…………

Ladder – at the top of the heap – Deesboy is the leader with a better total margin, closely followed by Troggs – both on 45. They are setting a cracking pace, only to be hottly chased by Tony M, who is “That Bloke” and who else but, “The Stray” round out the top 5. The bunch has started to settle nicely and I think that it is time the Tipstar made a few…………….

Predictions – “Boz” is making steady ground. He is on the move and is a smokey for the title. Also up there at a bit of value is “Be Careful’, but I think that “The Bloke” is the 1 to watch. Hates being a front runner so get in his ear.  May champions are an easy pick – Golden Boots Gus (pressure) and the “Stalwart” from the country will fade to mid table.

So – last but not least - it is time for me to chase the coin – in the next week I will hunt everyone who hasn’t paid down – probably a few who have. (Yes Danny Armstrong I know I owe you 50,000 dong. ) Next week I will tally it all up and see what the stakes will be. Hang in there and keep tipping.

PS – for the not so die hard Aussie Rules supporters – this picture is of JEZZA and is accepted as being the greatest mark to have ever been taken in the history of AFL!

The irregular Footy Update

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 13, 2008

  • Congratulations to the boys in Hanoi for, by all accounts, putting on a top day at yesterday’s Big Day Out with a handball clinic and having the telecast of the AFL Dream Team match during the event!
  • The Saigon contingent do the community thing on 24 May when we are involved in a 35th anniversary event for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam.

Vietnam Swans V Singapore Wombats, Hanoi 31 May

The Singapore Wombats are confirmed for 31 May in Hanoi. There are 18 of them making the tour and they have already booked their accommodation. That’s how serious they are!! By contrast, the Saigon boys who will come up to Hanoi… we are just sorting a team hotel now – but go ahead and book your own air ticket. Hanoi puts on a cracking show and this weekend will be no exception. Drinks for the two teams will be held on the Friday night and there will be a dinner after the match on the Saturday. Details are being confirmed as this email is being written.

It will be Singapore’s inaugural tour to Vietnam. Singapore wears the old South Melbourne jumper (which caused the massive clash with our Sydney Swans jumpers). The Vietnam Swans expect to unveil their new jumper, designed by www.blueinkasia.com, on that weekend.

We’ve already had major collateral damage with the weekend being shifted from 24 May – 31 May. Danny Armstrong and Scotty Stacey will not be able to make the rescheduled weekend. They’re locked into a triathlon weekend in Mui Ne with their respective families. Calamity. A further calamity is that the Saigon Rugby Club will probably have an international match on the same weekend which will make it difficult for some of our rugby/ footy players to leave Saigon.

The Asian Championships

The Champs will be held in Singapore on Saturday 5 September. It won’t be as cheap as what it was last year in Singapore. So, start watching the pennies now so you can blow the pounds in Singas. On the subject of pounding, that’s what Dave Kainey is doing to the pavement in Singapore as he looks for reasonably priced hotels for us. We hope to announce details of the Team Hotel for Singapore soon.

The Vibe around Vietnam’s footy grounds

The vibe is good. Very good if you’re counting the number of new footies in the country. Hanoi has 3 spankers. HCMC also has 3 spankers. It doesn’t get much better than that. In Hanoi, Willy is taking a lead role in firing up the training sessions and is doing a willy awesome job.

Yesterday in HCMC, we had 4 new recruits: Two of them, Chris and Nathan showcased some silky skills. Paul came out of retirement to kick the footy for the first time in yonks and Euan had his first ever kick of the Sherrin. Absolutely fantastic to see some new faces at training. Hopefully the four of them will become regulars.

Corporate Touch Tournament

Next weekend in Saigon, the rugby boys will be holding the Corporate Touch Tournament. If anyone would like to play in it, let me know and we’ll organize to have you put in a team. It would be good if we had some players who wanted to play in the Touch.

Missing the Footy Tips wrap on the Swans Blog?

The Tip Star, Muzza, went AWOL recently with his updates on the tipping. He emailed today to say that he hoped to resume doing what he isn’t paid to do – tonight or tomorrow. We can’t wait for that one. Tune in to www.vietnamswans.com (which has now had 33,000 hits) to see for yourself whether there is any evidence of remorse for his performance – or lack thereof. It could be a belter of a report.

Honk yer horn if you love footy.

Swans hit the greens

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 8, 2008

Ricky Ponting enjoys his golfYou know how some of the best sportsmen in the world like Ricky Ponting really enjoy their golf?

Well, the Swans are no exception.

Last week 4 of the biggest Swans names took their sticks to the greens: Former President Kainey; Super Savvy Stacey the Coach, Current Swans President Phil Johns and the biggest of them all, occasional Ruckman Drew Franklin.

At the Song Be golf course on the 12th tee (truth be known, it could have been the 15th tee), there’s a ”hole in the wall”. Rather than having an ATM, they have hawkers on the other side selling golf balls. We chose to shop at Tina Gold’s Thien Thanh Shop. She even has business cards. Her card reads:

Vocational:

  • in every way golf Ball
  • special free on Board
  • good Ball

You see, at the beginning middle and end of the free on board golf ball, it’s all good.

“It’s new style!”

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 5, 2008

Chicken Style in VietnamThe Swans’ Blog recently received this photograph.

Motorbikes in Vietnam often have too much to carry. In this situation, the pillion passenger must sit on the floor of the motorbike because of the load on the back.

A Vietnamese colleague explained that It’s new style. Given they’re chickens in the basket rather than dogs, we guess it’s “Chicken style”.

That would go some way to explain the head moving back and forth.

Hearin’ me?

Hanoi’s Big Day Out – next Saturday

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 4, 2008

The Big Day Out, HanoiAvid readers of the Swans Blog will be aware that the Bali Geckos will have to postpone their trip to Vietnam next weekend on the 10 May 2008.

However, do not be alarmed. In it’s place we now have the 2008 Big Day Out in Hanoi!

As per recent tradition in Hanoi, the Big Day Out will be held at the American Club (where else would you hold an Australian event?) and will go all day.

As always there will be heaps of events for all nationalities and ages including the live music which will come on in the evening.

The highlight of the day is expected to be the appearance of the Vietnam Swans, ably led by the amicable and omnipresent Micky Francis.

The Swans will hold a number of footy activities. For old and young, for those of different different nationalities and for those of different religious and political persuasions, it will be a magnificent opportunity to rub shoulders with the stars from the Swans.

How good is that? Get down there next Saturday and judge for yourself. It should be a cracker.

Bali Geckos postpone Vietnam tour

Posted by Vietnam Swans on May 4, 2008

The Bali GeckosThe Bali Geckos last week advised the Vietnam Swans that they would not be able to make the tour to Saigon next wekend due to a lack of players.

The Vietnam Swans are well aware of the difficulty of having enough players for a tour (we had to postpone last year’s trip to Malaysia for the same reason). This was also the key driving factor for deciding to have a combined Vietnam team covering both Hanoi and Saigon.

By drawing upon players in both cities, we are more likely to get the required numbers for the tours that we commit to. And if Vietnam is touring, other teams from the region are more likely to tour to Vietnam. And then, it’s all good again.

Meanwhile, the Geckos have said that they hope to tour to Vietnam next year in 2009.
