The 3rd Grand Final Cyclo Parade, Hanoi

The Vietnam Swans Grand Final Cyclo Parade

The Vietnam Swans Grand Final Cyclo Parade

Do not be so focussed on next week’s Vietnam Swans AFL Grand Final Parties that you overshoot the Vietnam Swans 3rd Grand Final Cyclo Parade!

On Thursday 25th September, the Grand Final Cyclo Parade will kick off at Le Pub, 25 Hang Be Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

Basically, it’s a pub crawl through the Old Quarter in Cyclos dressed up in club colours. Everyone dresses up in their favourite footy colours (Adam usually dresses in Richmond’s colours as ”A Tribute to 9th Place”). Not surprisingly, most of us will be wearing our new Vietnam Swans jumpers.

It’s great fun and gives the Vietnamese another opportunity to reflect upon the strange ways of foreigners. Back in Australia, the event is seen as a novel curiosity and so, last year, the Herald Sun carried a photo of organiser, Micky J in his Cyclo on the night.

The fun will start at 6pm on Thursday 25 September at Le Pub, 25 Hang Be Street, Old Quarter, Hanoi. The price is 200,000VND. All are welcome and bookings are essential (because we need to book the cyclos!). Contact Le Pub, Micky J or vietnamswans@gmail.com for further information.

Australia’s favourite footy jumper

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 18, 2008

Australia's favourites
Australia’s best dressed team flanked by the Old Hobartians and the New York Magpies

Australia’s favourite footy jumpers have been discovered. The Old Hobartians Association Football Club won the coveted gong.

www.150years.com.au reports that “Australian Football 150 Years Ambassador, Kevin Sheedy, said the OHA Football Club was a deserving winner.

“This competition was judged on both the originality of the design and the history behind the playing kit- the Ships guernsey is undoubtedly unique and there is a great link with the club’s hometown of Hobart.

In the all important international category, the New York Magpies won the prize.

We don’t know how many votes the Vietnam Swans jumper scored. But, it is difficult to imagine us being more than one vote off the pace!

Photos of Swans Vs ANZAC

The Vietnam Swans Vs HMAS ANZAC, Saigon 27 August 2008

Thanks to Fred Wissink, we have received some more photos of the Vietnam Swans Vs HMAS ANZAC clash that was held in HCMC on 27 August 2008.

We all expected that the AFL would announce the winner of Australia’s favourite footy jumper today. But, alas, apparently it’s tomorrow. Never mind. When you look at the Swannies at RMIT against the ANZACs, the jumper is an absolute winner. It looked fairly tidy when Miss Australia wore our jumper – and it doesn’t look too bad when the boys wear it either!

Out and about in Saigon
Out and about in Saigon

Are you wondering what to do in Saigon? You need to get Out and About in Saigon.

It’s the latest website to tell you: what events are happening in town, sports venues, restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs etc.
Importantly, it also has a section on the AFL. You can find out the television schedule for footy on the Australia Network.
Out and about in Saigon also mentions that in Saigon, the Official Vietnam Swans 2008 AFL Grand Final Party will be held at the No. 5 Bar.
For long September-suffering Richmond fans, the good news is that the webmaster has inexplicably put a photo of the Tigers on the website.
Unheard of. Try www.outandaboutinsaigon.com

Vietnam Swans jumper wins a Sydney friend

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 16, 2008

Will they all take their hats off to the Vietnam Swans jumper tomorrow?

Will they all take their hats off to the Vietnam Swans jumper tomorrow?

Coincidentally, tomorrow, the AFL will announce the results for the ”Australia’s favourite footy jumper” competition.

Understandably, the question on every set of Vietnamese lips is, “Will the Vietnam Swans jumper win the international category?”

We’ll find out tomorrow and post the results on the Blog.

Meanwhile, Andy from Sydney has written to the Blog asking if he can purchase one of our jumpers:

I’m actually a Nth Melbourne supporter, who was born in Sydney. So the Swans are my 2nd team (just don’t mention the Elimination Final a fortnight ago eh? Haha) but I could never bring myself to wear anything Sydney Swans. It just felt and looked all wrong.

But with the Vietnam Swans jumper, I can support the Swans with the pride of remembering my fantastic yet brief time (back) in Vietnam (in 2002)!

Great story. Great jumper. The Vietnam Swans will very happily sell Andy a jumper for just USD65.

Wide Eyed Tours, Vietnam Travel Notes and the Vietnam Swans 2008 AFL Grand Final Parties

As the Official Vietnam Swans 2008 AFL Grand Final Parties get closer, people are really starting to take notice.

Today, two other websites, Wide Eyed Tours (We do travel differently to everybody else…) and Vietnam Travel Notes (Helping those visiting this amazing country with their own travels) picked up the poster for the Official Vietnam Swans 2008 AFL Grand Final Parties in Hanoi and HCMC – and plonked it on their home pages!

Interest in the AFL grand Final really seems to be gaining momentum this year – from Hanoi to Saigon.

Meanwhile, tomorrow, the Blog expects to announce details for the Vietnam Swans 3rd Annual Grand Final Cyclo Parade which will be held in Hanoi on 25 September 2008.

Daniel Kerr, the Eagles and the Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 14, 2008

Daniel Kerr, his uncles John & Mark and Vietnam Swans National President, Phil Johns in Saigon

Today’s Age newspaper ran a story on West Coast Eagles superstar, Daniel Kerr.

“WEST Coast expects to find out this week if it can secure its hottest property, Daniel Kerr, with a planned two-day seminar with Kerr and its out-of-contract stars.

“The Eagles’ midfielder, who shapes as the biggest name on the table during next month’s trade week, has asked for a five-year deal from next year, but the Eagles have stated they will offer a three-year deal on top of the one year remaining on his contract”, reported The Age.

Last month, Daniel’s uncles, Mark and John Regan, were travelling through Vietnam. While they were in Saigon, they caught up with the Vietnam Swans National President, Phil Johns at the Cafe Latin – with a bag of Daniel Kerr goodies.

In the bag was a West Coast jumper and a mega stubby holder/carrier. Both had been autographed by Daniel Kerr. There was also a West Coast scarf from the “Captain’s Club”. Mark and John donated all these items to the Vietnam Swans to raffle off at the Vietnam Swans 2008 AFL Grand Final Parties.

What makes this story particularly special is that Mark was the one to initiate contact with the Vietnam Swans finding us via this website.

The Vietnam Swans are extremely appreciative for the very generous and unexpected support from Mark, John and Daniel. It is amazing.

Anyway, if you would like to be the proud owner of these special pieces of West Coast memorabilia, you better get yourself a ticket to the Vietnam Swans Grand Final Parties. Tickets went on sale this weekend.

Footnote: Apparently, the Swans in Sydney also have an interest in Kerr. Football Manager, Andrew Ireland is currently refusing to comment on reports that Sydney is “extremely interested” in Kerr.

An interview with Bobby Skilton

Posted by Vietnam Swans on September 13, 2008

The Vietnam Swans 2005 AFL Grand Final and Bobby Skilton

The (then) Hanoi Swans 2005 AFL Grand Final Party and Bobby Skilton

Radio Sport 927 has an audio interview with one of the greatest ever, South Melbourne’s (Sydney Swans) Triple Brownlow Medalist, Bobby Skilton (click here to listen to the interview on 927′s website).

Bobby speaks about his first match; playing to win Grand Finals rather than individual awards; the particular importance of going into the players’ rooms when they are losing; the South Melbourne – Sydney Swans transition; the Two Cities One Team (Saigon, Hanoi and the Vietnam Swans?) philosophy and a lot more.

Bobby Skilton first found out about the Vietnam Swans when his nephew holidayed in Hanoi and stumbled across the Bobby Skilton Room on Pepperonis’ rooftop. The Bobby Skilton Room was where the Hanoi boys would talk footy and watch Friday night footy.

At the Official (then) Hanoi Swans 2005 AFL Grand Final Party, Wayne “Bubbles” Tinlin, had the footy team photographed underneath the Big Screen when the Premiership Cup was awarded to the Sydney Swans after their stunning victory over West Coast. One of the photographers also snapped a photo of us looking at Bobby Skilton as he strode out onto the MCG (see above).

We decided to have the photo mounted so that we could present it to Bobby. Three months later, current Vietnam Swans National President, Phil Johns, caught up with Bobby in Melbourne – and enjoyed a 3 hour counter lunch with the great man in Richmond.

Bobby beamed when he described how the AFL had given him a miniature replica Premiership Cup. The names of all the Sydney Swans Premiership players – and his own – were engraved on the Cup. The Cup now enjoys pride of place, in his home, up on the bar.

Bobby went on to explain that he receives many things from many people. “If you open any of my cupboards, you’ll be knocked out with the avalanche of things that come tumbling down. If you want to put something under one of the beds, forget it. No space.”

Unexpectedly, he went on to say that the mounted photo we gave him was different. Apparently, it sits on the bar next to one replica Premiership Cup!

Fabbo Phil says that the three hour lunch was amazing. “The bloke’s achievements and modesty go on and on. He has an ability to thread together stories that inspire while leaving you with a belly-ache from laughter. A genuinely great man and amazing to meet him as the Vietnam Swans’ representative.”

It’s more than a game

DT and Micky Francis at last year's GF Party

DT and Micky Francis at last year

Being involved in a Club when you’re overseas is a great experience. Often, it’s not until you actually leave that the depth of the experience crystalises.

For those of us left behind to continue flying the flag, it’s always good to hear from those who have left Vietnam to remind us of how good it is here.

The other day, after the Asian Champs, former President Daryl Taber (pictured with Micky Francis at last year’s Vietnam Swans Grand Final Party) wrote to the Blog to say, I’ve been so envious of you blokes this past weekend. Sounds great. Enjoyed all the reports. Keep up the great work, Swannies.

Another ex Prez, Dave “Flyer” Kainey chimed in with, An extraordinary weekend. The Swans have made massive inroads into establishing a fair bit of credibility in the region. It is a great Club to be part of.

After the recent match against the HMAS ANZAC, former player, Growds forwarded the post-match report to wife, Bernie. Bernie wrote to the Blog screaming, As if I’m not home sick enough for Vietnam! She then pummelled Growds with, When is the next good job in HCMC coming up?

Meanwhile, at the Champs, the Vietnam Swans locked in a few more dates:

  • 25 October Saigon – Vietnam Swans Vs Malaysia Warriors
  • 22 November, Phnom Penh – The Indochine Cup: Cambodia, Thailand, Lao and Vietnam
  • 28 December, MCG, Melbourne – 3rd Day of the Boxing Day Test Match
  • 29 December, Melbourne – The 4th Annual Vietnam Swans Golf Classic
  • March, Saigon – Vietnam Swans Vs Bali Geckos
  • 25 April – Anzac Day, Thailand Tigers Vs Vietnam Swans, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
