Rob Dickson’s eldest son dies

The Age newspaper has reported the tragic news that Rob Dickson’s eldest son dies after South Africa car crash.

“Gabriel Dickson, 8, died in the Unitas Hospital yesterday from injuries sustained in the smash that also claimed the lives of former Hawthorn player Dickson and his younger son Byron, 5.

“Dickson’s wife Dusty was also injured in the crash, which occurred on a road between Sun City and Pretoria.”

In a statement released by the AFL, “The families of Robert and Dusty Dickson regretfully and with great sadness wish to inform relatives and friends that their beautiful boy Gabriel passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Tuesday April 14.

“A memorial service for Rob, Gabriel and Byron will be held at a future time back in Melbourne. Dusty and her family are thankful for your support, thoughts, prayers and love through this horrific time.”

Earlier in the week, World Footy News published a story titled, Vale Rob Dickson. In the story, it refers to another post on their website about Rob Dickson and the tour to Vietnam by several AFL players in 2006, CARE AFL All Stars meet Hanoi Swans for HIV/AIDS awareness.

The Vietnam Swans Blog wasn’t alive in 2006. However, we have found the original email that was sent out the day after our match at Dead Cat Stadium, Hanoi on 26 October 2006. In the tragedy of the South African car crash, we reproduce the email below, which bubbles with enthusiasm, to remember and celebrate the time that Rob and his friends dropped into Hanoi. They gave us a Thursday night we will never forget.

Guys, what an absolutely sensational evening last night was.

For those who couldn’t make it to Dead Cat, we did a couple of training drills led by DT and MJ. Then the AFL Giants took a training run.

Game on.

Game on.

This was followed by “Game On” which consisted of two 10 minute halves. Everyone played wherever they wanted and there was no such thing as “Pagan’s Paddock” as we had opted for the flooding technique. Someone said the Swans had 28 players (which included a number of rugby players which was great) on the ground at one stage. But that’s fair.

That may have helped with the score line which was very respectable. The visitors kicked 4.2.26 to our 2.6.18. For our team, it was APEC Growds who kicked AGOAL followed by another. Tragedy occurred after the second goal when the footy cleared the fence and ended up in the lap of a passing motorcyclist.

Then it was off to the Embassy for a couple of refreshers where we were met by the netballers who had just finished a match.

At the Australian Embassy, triple AFL Premiership player, Clark Keating, describes the lead up to the 2007 AFL Grand Final in which the Hanoi Swans will play

The Director of CARE gave a short speech about the role that the AFL players had played in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness which was backed up by a couple of the players. Then triple premiership player Clark Keating got up and spoke about the 2007 Grand Final in which the Hanoi Swans would play. He described the week and the feelings and the emotions that we would face – right through to the final siren (see It’s Today. It’s now.).

Then it was off to the Dragon Fly and the New Century nightclubs. If we weren’t in the land of the midgets, you might not have noticed the 190cm (average height) of the AFLers on the dance floor.

This morning, Chan the Fruiterer received a visit from Clark Keating and Dylan McLaren, CARE, MJ and Phil Johns  to buy some bananas and cabbage – and to have their photo taken (see picture in the Herald Sun – “Chan was thrilled until the boys picked up one of her lettuces and started kicking it around like a footy”).

It was an absolutely cracking night.

Thanks Rob.

Canty snags another Swans visitor in Buenos Aires

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 15, 2009

Baz's brother, Canty and the big man himself, Baz

Baz's brother, Canty and the big man himself, Baz

Former Swan, Chris Canty has been very popular lately over there in Buenos Aires.

He recently had Big Bad Baz (a Pom who played for us in the 2007 Asian Champs) and his brother stay with him.

In this photo, if you look very closely, you can see that Canty is wearing his (2005?) Hanoi Swans AFL Grand final shirt. If you also look closely, you can see that Chris is drinking wine!

This is unheard of for the man who put together www.happiest hour.com, a website devoted to the promotion of those venues that provide reasonably priced (cheap) beer. The website says,

We started www.thehappiesthour.com in March 2004 for all those people who wanted to buy more beer for their buck. In a time of increased “sin taxes”, we feel it is our duty to tell the public where the cheapest deals are around Australia.

But Chris’ accompanying email explains all about why he is seen drinking something other than beer – “We found cheap wine!”

Chris likes most things that are cheap. He was therefore very pleased to tell the Swans Blog that you can now fly to Buenos Aires from Sydney for just $1,036, including taxes. And, ah, at the risk of sounding difficult, for those of us living in Vietnam?

“Catch Jetstar to Sydney, I reckon.” A helpful suggestion, for sure.

Canty says that he’s “looking forward to receiving the next Vietnam Swans visitors” – no doubt, regardless of whether they arrive via the north or south pole.

Mr Will meets Mr Chris in Buenos Aires

Will and Snags Canty

Will and Snags Canty

Former Swan, Will Martin was in Argentina a month ago and met up with a genuine mate, another former Swan, Chris “Snags” Canty who now lives in Buenos Aires.

Will had been hoping to travel to South America with two other mates; Drew and Sam. Alas, Drew and Sam both pulled the ol’, “You won’t believe it”, story. They both canceled their airfares to South America so that they could continue working for their respective bosses without the interruption of holidays… Unheard of.

Somehow, Chris and Will were able to quickly resume their lives over there. Regarding the photo, Will says:

“We’re devouring some fine Argentinian meat in a roll, similar to the kebabs at Bia Hoi Corner (in Hanoi), only a thousand times better. You will note that we are washing it down with a refreshing ale!”

Not unheard of, Mr Will.

Former Hawthorn player, Rob Dickson, dies in car crash

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 11, 2009

Rob Dickson visited Hanoi's Dead Cat Stadium with the AFL CARE All Stars for a match against the then Hanoi Swans

Rob Dickson, film director, visited Hanoi's Dead Cat Stadium in 2006 with the AFL CARE All Stars for a match against the then Hanoi Swans

It is with great sadness that the Vietnam Swans read in The Age newspaper this afternoon that: Former Hawk, Robert Dickson killed in car crash.

Dickson played 17 matches for Hawthorn between 1988 and 1990 and was named as an emergency for the Hawks’ 1989 premiership team. He also played two matches for the Brisbane Bears in 1991.

Dickson, 45, had also been an ambulance rescue pilot and was the winner of the “Australian Survivor” TV program.

Dickson was widely recognised for his football documentaries, including the recently-broadcast Essence of the Game and Shane Crawford Exposed, released in 2004.

On 26 October 2006, Dickson, along with the “AFL CARE All Stars”, came to Hanoi’s Dead Cat Stadium to play a match against the then Hanoi Swans. Big names playing for the All Stars included triple premiership player for Brisbane, Clark Keating; his brother Aaron who played in Port Adelaide’s premiership; and Craig Starcevich who played in Collingwood’s 1990 premiership.

Dickson filmed the match and did several interviews. Highlights were to have appeared on the opening edition of the “Footy Show” in 2007, but we were bumped by the breaking Ben Cousins drug story.

The then Hanoi Swans and the AFL CARE All Stars

The then Hanoi Swans and the AFL CARE All Stars

The AFL in partnership with CARE Australia had brought a team of AFL players to Vietnam to travel through the country promoting HIV AIDS awareness.  On the 23rd October, the Vietnam News ran a story, Australian footballers shun stigma to play games with AIDS victims.

In the couple of days that the Swannies met Dickson, his passion and enthusiasm for life was contagious. He had a can-do attitude where everything was possible and he made those around him feel like they too could achieve their dreams – if only they dared to dream.

Dickson was wanting to help others – which was why he was filming both the HIV AIDS awareness trip and the footy match.

The Vietnam Swans pass on our condolences to Dickson’s family and friends. A great man.

See Get on your Bike in the AFL’s J Squad magazine for a story by former Saint, Mark McGough who gives the inside story of the bike ride through Vietnam for CARE Australia. There is also a story on CARE Australia’s website called The CARE Footy Challenge to Vietnam.

Bali Geckos, East Timor Crocs and the Crikey Cup!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 10, 2009

Geckos to play East Timor for the Crikey Cup

Geckos to play East Timor for the Crikey Cup

The Bali Geckos will play the East Timor Crocs for the inaugural Crikey Cup in Darwin on 13 June as a curtain raiser to the AFL Round 12 clash between the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide Crows.

The Crikey Cup is a tribute to Steve Irwin, who had a strong association with crocodiles, including those crocs from East Timor.

Below is an excerpt from the press release:

The idea for the Crikey Cup came from Steve Irwin’s connection with East Timor and its sacred symbol, the crocodile – which they call ‘grandfather’.  In 2000 Steve Irwin led a team from Australia Zoo, with the Australian Defence Force and the World Society for the Protection of Animals, to rescue two injured crocodiles from a cramped and destroyed cage in Dili, the capital.

Determined to respect the crocodile’s symbolic status in East Timor, Steve refused to evacuate the reptiles to secure facilities in Australia. Instead, Australia Zoo funded and built two state-of-the-art enclosures in Dili.  At the time, Steve described the rescue as one of the hardest but most rewarding of his life.  Whilst in Dili the Irwins also donated funds for medical treatment of the people caught up in the violence of that time.

Bali Geckos Club President Mark Parthezius said, “Ultimately we are hoping this will become an annual event where teams from Australia and Asia can take part in a tournament to honour the legacy of the Crocodile Hunter and Eco-Warrior.”

Mr Parthezius added, “We are going to take down those Timor Crocs the same way Steve did, with 100% commitment, in the spirit of our friendships – and the game.”

The historic match is supported by Terri Irwin, and their renowned wildlife park Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland.  The match is also one of two curtain-raisers to the Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide night match, and is backed by the NTAFL.

Eddie teh Mexican, no longer looking for a wife but still looking for No. 26

Eddie the Mexican, no longer looking for a wife but still looking for No. 26

Do you recognize this jumper from last year’s match against Singapore?

Eddie the Mexican – who was fined for being the only Mexican on the 2007 Asian Champs tour – returned briefly to HCMC a fortnight ago to marry the lovely, Ms Tram Anh. Eddie, who seems to be in an acquisitive mood at the moment, would now like to purchase the No. 26 Club jumper which he wore against Singapore last year. If you happen to know where the No. 26 jumper might be, please email vietnamswans@gmail.com.

The Bushfire Match aftermath

Last weekend, the Kinglake Footy Club played its first match since the Black Saturday fires. They spoke of the importance of playing that first match as being a symbol of resilience and regrowth. They spoke of sport being a vehicle to bring people together.

The Vietnam Swans and Bali Geckos footy clubs put on a very appropriate weekend that we should all be very proud of. It was a great effort by everyone.

The AFL sent us an email earlier in the week to say that they have forwarded the presentation we prepared, bushfire-fundraiser-and-match-summary2, to the Victorian Premier’s office.

We have just five more Bushfire Commemorative t shirts remaining. Want to buy one for just VND200K?? Email vietnamswans@gmail.com. Once we have sold them, we will put that money together with another VND2.4million and send it through to the YMDFL. This should bring the total raised to AUD4,500.

Apology

Last Friday, we emailed the presentation re the Bushfire to everyone. We thanked the sponsors who had directly contributed to the fundraising effort. Alas, we overlooked the incredible amount of time and design expertise that www.renow.com.vn and Whitemint had put into the design of our amazing posters and banners (printing was also paid for by them). Sincere apologies for a terrible oversight.

www.renow.com.vn is an online real estate search website. Find the perfect house, apartment, commercial property etc online. Whitemint is an independent marketing and creative solutions agency. Apologies to www.renow.com.vn and Whitemint and thank you again for your great support.

Anzac Day Match, Kanchanaburi

In just three weekends’ time, we will be there in Thailand at Hellfire Pass for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service followed by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast. Several hours after that, we will play Thailand in the ANZAC Day match at Kanchanaburi.

So far, 37 Vietnam Swans will make the tour including former Swans President, Dave “Flyer” Kainey.

For some, it will be a particularly emotional weekend. For all of us, it is likely to be a weekend that we will remember vividly when we’re 80 years old, sitting on the verandah in our rocking chairs,  reflecting upon our lives.

If they ever made a movie, they'd call it, "Gus"

If they ever made a movie, they'd simply call it, "Gus"

Speaking of rocking chairs, it will be the last weekend for the veteran, Captain Gus McEwin to play for the Vietnam Swans as a resident of Vietnam. Gus will move to Jakarta in the middle of May.

If you could win Brownlows just by playing matches, Gus would have won more than anyone.

He played in the Swans first ever tournament in 2003 against Hong Kong and Thailand – and has been playing ever since. It’s been a mighty effort by Gus and it is extremely fitting that we have such a big occasion, in the ANZAC Match, to farewell him.

honk-if-you-love-the-footyFor those in Hanoi on Saturday night (11 April)

This Saturday night from 6.30pm, the Jim Beam Swanettes (Party Crew) will be at the Studio (32 Ma May Street, Old Quarter). There will be cheap drinks, Jim Beam, raffles and Aussie Rules live (in a delayed sort of a way) on the big screen.

Honk if you love footy.

The Match Report: Vietnam V Bali

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 6, 2009

Damo now writes exclusively for the Swans Blog

Damo now writes exclusively for the Swans Blog

Damo files this report on the Bushfire Match between the Vietnam Swans and Bali Geckos held in Saigon on 28 March 2009.

Saturday, 28th March 2:00 pm, marked the much awaited season opener for 2009. RMIT University was proud to have real Aussie Rules goal posts marking the grounds for a change.

The match was between the Vietnam Swans and the Bali Geckos. It formed part of the Black Saturday Bushfire Fundraiser and Tribute to the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League and fire-affected communities.

The Swans looked great having ditched last year’s tight little “porn star” shorts to the obvious disappointment of some fans. For the first time, the field was missing a few iconic faces of the Swans including the revered “Supercoach Scotty Stacey”. The “Silver Fox”, Phil Johns, brought his spirit and his voice-box but not his boots so, alas, there was no repeat of the famed “soccer goal” from the pocket. We had a new captain, the awesome “Monkeeee” who found space enough to add another BOG award to his trophy cabinet.

Monkeeee - another BOG for the trophy cabinet

Monkeeee - another BOG for the trophy cabinet

The whistle blew, the ball was bounced and Drew and the centres quickly converted. Perhaps we had an advantage due to the reflection in the eyes of the Bali team caused by Drew’s new fluorescent green boots and the blazing, bright sun. This kept up, helped by the unstoppable marking powers of… “Jarrod”… who really deserves a cool nick name.

The initial dominance of the Swans really took the Geckos boys by surprise. They were chasing us until we lapsed just before half time when we allowed the visitors to boot 4 unanswered goals in the last minutes of play.

Gus and his flat-footed opponent

Gus and his flat-footed opponent

At half time, the only person who didn’t have his head in the ice bucket, cooling his radiator, was the Veteran, “Gus”. Gus, who has recently completed ½ marathons and jungle endurance races, was complaining that his opponent in defence “hadn’t moved all day”. In response, Gus was taken off the very tall, skinny “white guy” that to the rest of us looked a lot like a goal post and put on the Monster full forward who made him earn his dinner.

The Fashion on the Field award goes, with thanks, to whoever forgot to bring the kit jerseys (Ed’s note: we don’t like to start rumours, but do the initials “Danny Armstrong” mean anything to anyone??). With bench players exchanging sweaty tops with those coming off the field, the one-size-fits-all approach left some of the bigger guys making plays in skin tight “boob tubes” (Ed’s note: all good. Sex sells and with no more “porn star” shorts, something constructive needed to be done…).

We had a shiny new scoreboard built by the hardworking folk at Corsair Marine but, unfortunately, at the end of the day, the bigger numbers were on the wrong side of the board. Even with Willy’s dodgy hammy making it through the entire game and the “energizer bunny”, Chris, who just never stopped running all day, it still wasn’t enough.

As a consolation, we seem to have broken the spell of 2008 by having our goals/behinds ratio in the right order. We can now call our forwards, “goal kicking forwards”. With a little more accuracy training, those last couple of close shaves could have passed on the right side of the post. There is, as always, a “next time”.

Goal Umpire Fleur's decisions are "Final!!"

Make sure you check out some of the awesome pics taken by Adam Martin and Bill Crang. Lots of photos to be seen at the Vietnam Swans Web Album. And don’t just look at the foreground but give attention to our supportive sponsors you can see in the banners.

Special thanks to Field Umpire Greg Armstrong and the boundary and goal umpires – including goal umpire, Fleur, whose Decision is Final!!

Next up, the Anzac Day match against the Thailand Tigers on 25 April in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

Footy lives on in Kinglake

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 5, 2009

Kinglake Footy lives on

Kinglake Footy lives on

Yesterday, 8 weeks on from Black Saturday, the Kinglake Footy Club ran out onto Memorial Oval.

In front of a crowd of more than 2,000, the Kinglake “Lakers” ran through their “Rise from the Ashes” banner and went on to win the match.

Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority chairwoman Christine Nixon said the day was symbolic as it was the first step forward for the town.

“This was really a goal to start the footy season and they’ve done it. This is about renewing communities. It’s important for families to come together at this time, coming to the football and doing something that’s a bit routine. It’s a way of getting stability back in their lives”, she said.

Premier John Brumby said, “This is a game that has captured the hearts and minds of so many people. Sport is so important to rebuilding communities and bringing people together.”

Linda Craske, one of seven local Country Fire Authority volunteers to get new tattoos of a phoenix after the fires, said the football match was an important step in helping the community to heal. “People are looking happier and more relaxed,” she said.

For more information on the match in Kinglake, as reported in The Age newspaper, please see In bush, fire brings with it regrowth, Kinglake’s footy team makes passionate return to footy field and Emotions still raw as big men soar in Kinglake.

Saigon Bushfire Fundraiser collects USD3,047.74

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 4, 2009

Cameron Caine, President of the Kinglake footy club. Footy resumes today!

Cameron Caine, President of the Kinglake footy club. Footy resumes today!

Thank you very much to all the sponsors and people who came out to support last weekend’s Bushfire Fundraiser & Match in Saigon which was co-hosted by the Vietnam Swans and Bali Geckos.

USD3,047.74 was raised and transferred to the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League (YVMDFL).

As it happens, Kinglake which is part of the YVMDFL, will kick off its 2009 season today.

Just 9 days after the Black Saturday fires claimed 37 of Kinglake’s own, a meeting was held at the oval (which had been a sanctuary during the fires) to decide the future of the town’s 3 footy and  netball teams and an Auskick program. As described in The Age today, “the earth beneath their feet that evening was still scorched. Light towers, a water pump and the netball clubrooms gone. The vote was taken: do we play on?”

“A hundred and fifty hands went straight up”, said the Kinglake President, Cameron Caine. “You can kick us in the guts but you can’t knock us over”. Caine had originally thought that there would be no football in Kinglake in 2009 as he “thought people would have more to worry about than sport” – yet it turned out that was exactly what they wanted.

At Thursday night’s training, Caine told the players, friends and families to stay strong and proud. “We ran from it (the bushfires) together. We hid from it together. And now we’re going to rebuild together”.

Last weekend in Saigon, we did something to try and help these communities rebuild. From the Vietnam Swans and the Bali Geckos, thank you again for your support.

Bushfire Appeal raises USD3,047.74

Saigon President of the Vietnam Swans gives the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank USD3,047.74

Saigon President of the Vietnam Swans gives the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank USD3,047.74 to transfer to the bushfire ravaged areas

This morning, Derrin Limbrick, the Saigon President of the Vietnam Swans gave the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank in Vietnam, Danny Armstrong, USD3,047.74 to transfer to the bushfire ravaged areas of Australia.

The money was raised at last weekend’s fundraiser co-hosted by the Bali Geckos and the Vietnam Swans. Fittingly, Derrin wore a Vietnam Swans hat and Danny wore a Bali Geckos hat.

At today’s exchange rates, the USD3,047.74 is worth AUD4,336.57. Danny has advised that the Commonwealth Bank, which has already donated AUD1million to the bushfire relief effort, has now transferred the money completely free of all bank charges and struck a mid-rate on the exchange rate (meaning the bank made “zero” from the transaction).

Thank you to all who contributed to the success of the event. A special thank you to the following sponsors who made a direct contribution to the fundraising efforts: Jetstar, Caravelle Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, Equatorial Hotel, renow.com.vn,  Commonwealth Bank of Australia, JASPAS, RMIT University, Kim Hai Butchery, Jim Beam, La Vie Water, Cafe Latin and the Sydney Swans AFL Club.

All money raised has been sent to the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League which covers those areaas worst affected by the bushfires.

A message from the CEO of the YVMDFL

Posted by Vietnam Swans on April 1, 2009

Stephen Walter, CEO of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League thanks everyone associated with last weekend's fundraiser for their support

Stephen Walter, CEO of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League, thanks everyone associated with last weekend's fundraiser for their support

The following email was received from Stephen Walter, CEO of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League. The YVMDFNL shall receive all the proceeds from last week’s Bushfire Fundraiser.

Thank you to the Vietnam Swans, Bali Geckos and supporters.

There is no doubting that all of you are passionate footy lovers & equally passionate about supporting great causes.

Can you please extend my sympathies to your Indonesian colleagues with the shocking news of the dam wall collapse on the day prior to your match (see the Jakarta Post, Scores missing after Indonesia dam bursts, 77 dead).

Your efforts in putting the match on are first class. Please pass on my congratulations to all of your helpers, players & supporters.

The money will be put to good use and, as an example, we are right at this moment putting together a sporting pack for our members who lost their homes / possessions. We envisage the pack will be worth about $300 to $400 and will include footy boots, runners, track suits, polos etc etc.

Although our list is not final, we expect to be supporting around 50 footballers & netballers.

Sorry that you didn’t get the (signed Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League) jumpers in time (they arrived in Saigon two days ago on the Monday of this week) but $200 & $210 for the two jumpers was a great result. Damian Monkhorst (one of the signatories) is still playing in the YVMDFL for Woori Yallock.

I will put together a media release and your photos will be put on our website over the next few days.

Once again, thank you to all of you & if you are in town, please give me a call so we can catch up or perhaps see Kinglake in action.

I look forward to getting your jumpers (a Vietnam Swans jumper and a Bali Geckos jumper were signed by each team’s best player on the day of the Bushfire Match and have been forwarded to the YVMDFL). They will be proudly displayed in our office.

Well done & congratulations to all at the Bali Geckos & Vietnam Swans.

Regards

STEPHEN WALTER
