Guests "On Josh's Couch" for last night's ANZAC Day Replay in Saigon included, Shag, Shag's Dad and Fabbo

Last night was the ANZAC Day Replay between Collingwood and Essendon. In Hanoi and Saigon, the Swannies met up to watch the telecast.

In Saigon, more than 20 Swannies met up at Cafe Latin (25 Doing Du Street, D1). We had a few special guests in the audience including Shag’s Dad, Michael, and his mate, Roger. Josh’s Dad, David, was also there.

Josh’s Paddock was a big hit. Guests included Shag, his Dad and Fabbo.

Be sure you’re there next Friday night as the tradition continues to grow.

An update from the Saigon Prez, Dez!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 13, 2010

Saigon Prez, Dez, with his lovely fiance, Fleur, on the recent Cambodian footy trip

Saigon Prez, Dez Limbrick gives us an update.

Gents

It is time for another big round up, which is earlier than normal this week, because we have a lot of things to cover.  The next few weeks will be busy indeed with the Vietnam Swans Back of the Car Sale, the Heritage Round Clash in Hanoi, the return Cambodian Cobras match on the 4th September, and the Grand Final Party on the 25th September.

First up, we really need to start to get confirmation on the numbers for Hanoi as soon as possible.  As previously mentioned I would like to get a good touring party together for this match.  For those who where living on another planet, we lost the first match in the series by 1 point.  It was a cracker of a game and so it would be great if we could come away with a victory this time around.

The basic schedule for the weekend will be to fly up to Hanoi on Friday night, catch up with all of the Hanoi guys on Friday night and then play the match on the Saturday afternoon.  We are also trying to arrange a catch up session/bbq on Sunday for lunch before flying back to HCMC.  If you are planning on making the trip, can you please let me know as soon as possible.  Matt Townsend is looking into a group booking for flights which will help reduce the cost, but, to make this happen, we will need to get confirmation on numbers asap.

Vietnam Swans Back of the Car Sale

I spoke about this at our last training for those who were there. Thanks to our friends at Vietnam Homewares, we have been able to organize a fund-raising “Back of the Car” sale, which will be held at:

The Snap Cafe, 32 Tran Ngoc Dien in D2 (see Google Maps) on the morning of Saturday 21st August.

The more people who attend, the more we will help out our Sponsor, Vietnam Housewares, and the Club.

This is a great opportunity for the Club to show our sponsors what sort of a difference we can make. We are looking for people to assist with the morning shift (7 30 – 12 pm) and the afternoon shift (12 – 4 pm).  We will be training on the same day so we really need some people who would not normally be training to assist with the afternoon shift.  So if you know of someone, please let me know.  Otherwise we just want you all to come down and check it out.  This is one event for the partners, better halves, girlfriends, the boss, whatever you call her, just make sure you bring her along.

Friday Night on the Couch with Josh

The match this Friday is between the Bombers and the Pies.  If you’re looking for somewhere to watch the match, get down to Cafe Latin on Dong Du St, D1.  Josh will be hosting the match, and Cafe Latin provide our own room with happy hour beer prices during the match.  Can’t argue with that.

Training

Training is on this week as usual, 2 30pm sharp at RMIT, District 7.  If you have any queries, please feel free to get back to me.  We are looking for good numbers leading up to the Hanoi game, Guys, so make sure you get down for a kick.

Grand Final

We are close to finalizing a venue for the 2010 AFL Grand Final and hope to have confirmation on this next week.  Similar to last year, the Swans will be hosting a relaxed all-in-one, ticket priced, Grand Final Party.  Those who went last year, I am sure, will tell you how good it was (apart from the result).  The day will include breakfast and lunch, drinks, raffles, competitions and some fantastic AFL gear to auction.  So lock in the 25th September and tell your mates. (Details for Hanoi’s Grand Final Party coming very soon as well).

Asian Champs

The premier event of the calendar for Asian Footy is coming around fast.  This year we are hoping for big things from the Swans and it is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best trips that the Club has ever put together.  The Asian Champs will be in Shanghai this year on the 16th October.  At this stage we have Matt and MJ looking into flight deal and, thanks to Patrick Stringer in Shanghai, we now have a fantastic accommodation deal at a 5 Star Hotel.  This is no mean feat considering that the Word Expo will be on at the same time.  There is more good news, because on the following day after the Champs, Sunday, the AFL will be playing an exhibition match between the Brisbane Lions and the Melbourne Demons.  At the moment we are looking at scheduling a Friday departure and a Monday return. However, if you want to stay longer, that is completely up to you.  What I am looking for at the moment is some indicative numbers. So, if you think you want to go, can you please send me, Derrin Limbrick, an e-mail to let me know.  I will not take this as the final confirmation but I just want to know that you’re interested.

AusKick

It’s on again in District 2 on Sunday mornings.

Hope to see you all Friday night at Latin, or at training on Saturday.

Ya hearin’ me!

Ex Swannie brings Tarrawingee footy team to Vietnam!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 11, 2010

Daniel Hogarth, second from right, at the Swannies 2008 Annual Golf Day, Melbourne (other Swannies: Ryan Jefferey, Phil Johns, Pieter Bossink and Daryl Taber).

Ex Swannie, Daniel Hogarth, who was there for the then Hanoi Swans first ever overseas tour (Malaysia) in 2004 – and who comes along to the Swannies Annual Golf Days in Melbourne – will come to Vietnam in September – with his footy team. Below is his email.

The footy club I play for, Tarrawingee (we play in Ovens and King Footy League, Victoria), is having a footy trip to Vietnam. We will be arriving on 18th of Sept and will spend a few days in Saigon.

Maybe that Sunday would work well – the week before the AFL Grand Final?

I was going to see if both the Swans and Tarra could hook up for a game, beers and a bit of promotion of the Swans etc.

Let me know if you like the initial idea and we can make it happen.

Will be great just to catch up with you and a few of the other boys anyway.

As the Swannies would say, Honk if ya love the footy!

Daniel

(Ed’s note: Bring it onnnnnnnnnnnnnn! Another of Tarra’s key people is Boca and Boca is well connected with another awesome Swannie, Will Martin. I’ll give ya the tip: the Swannies are honkin’.)

The Vietnam Swans are now confirming the availability of RMIT University’s oval.

Rick Trewavas, Jakarta Garudas (sic) and Tony Morwood

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 10, 2010

Aussie Rules in Jakarta, 1993/4. Rick, second from right, was the field umpire. Son, Angus was boundary. Bill Cherry and Dick Willing were goal umps

You will recall that Rick Trewavas’ cousin, Bruce Tamagno, recently wrote to the Vietnam Swans giving us more of an insight into Rick (click here for article). Among other things, Bruce mentioned Rick’s involvement with footy in Indonesia and the Jakarta Garudas (sic). Rick now puts the record straight.

“Bruce There”, my cousin and geographer of note who answers the phone with “Bruce Here”, is somewhat confused in his reference to the Garudas. He also has poor taste in photo selection that appeared on your website. (It may be of interest to know that the photo was taken in Amiens, our base for the 90th ANZAC anniversary Dawn Service at Villers – Bretenoux and I had been in a good paddock for sometime). I digress.

Before the Jakarta Bintangs established themselves, there were efforts to get an Aussie Rules Association up and going. In 1982-83 we had a footy tipping competition going – things were tough. Results by telex on Monday mornings, two week waits for newspapers/betamax videos, Radio Australia etc etc – which I invariably won through cheating. Unfortunately, apart from a kick in the ‘park’, we suffered from a lack of numbers to organise anything else.

As a concerned parent, (concerned that my son would be deprived of his cultural heritage), I started an Aussie Rules elective at the British International School, Permata Hijau campus, in 1988 that saw out a season or two. In 1992, we hosted a Grand Final BBQ in the backyard at Bangka Raya which established JARS  – the Jakarta Aussie Rules Society whose priority charter was the enjoyment of the game without necessarily playing – we think that may be the forerunner of today’s gala Grand Final affair.

We backed up in 1993-94 at Country Woods Estate and, in addition, actually played an Australia Day game under the auspices of ANZA and under lights at ISCI (International Sports Club of Indonesia) between the North Jakarta  Wombats and the Jakarta South Possums. It was brilliantly umpired by myself with a drawn result.

The attached photo features myself as the central adjudicator, Bill Cherry and Dick Willing as goal umpires and my son Angus as boundary ump (Angus is about to present us with our first grandchild in Feb 2011).

The Jakarta Bintangs’ website (click here) makes reference to efforts in 1993 to widen the impact of JARS and also notes our exhortations to ATVI. The rest is history as they say.

I left Jakarta in Dec 94 and the likes of Ken Allan et al (I am embarrassed to admit little recall of other names, although face images will never disappear) did a much better job in establishing Aussie Rules as a mainstream expat activity. Another friend of that time now runs a fully fledged comp for indigenous juniors in the wilds of Java and some of the kids run round in Broadbeach and Southport (QAFL) jumpers that we sent up last year.

Bruce There confuses his experience of the national flag (merah dan putih – red and white -  which has obvious attractions for Trewavas family members) at Country Woods Estate where he visited on occasion and he went one further and substituted “Garuda” for “Swan” in the recesses of his mind, a fair conclusion in its time.

I trust this clears up Bruce’s reference to Garudas and red and white stuff.

I am pleased that the Swans got a gig in Hanoi and therein rests my allegiance with some appreciable sentiment for the modern day Bintangs.

Footnote: Yesterday Rick emailed the Vietnam Swans about meeting the Sydney Swans’ Tony Morwood last week. Tony invited the Vietnam Swans, Vietnam Veterans and Southern Dragons to a recent Sydney Swans function at the MCG (click here for story):

The Vietnam Swans t-shirt has arrived. Many thanks, it shall be worn with pride.

I went to the Gold Coast Swans Supporters Annual Lunch, Friday last. Had a short chat with Tony Morwood and he was obviously very pleased to be associated with the Vietnam Swans.

On his way back to Steak and Kidney he was probably wondering who was the bloke drinking the red wine and muttering about some BOG (Rick Trewavas) Medal Swans v Cobras! (click here for story).

Yours in Footy, Rick

Murray Heath, President of the Cambodian Cobras wrote:

Lock in the 4th September. He then adds, It will be my last duty with the Cobras.

It will be a shame to lose Murray – just after he has helped to resurrect footy in Cambodia – but fantastic that he is able to get the Cobras to travel prior to his departure.

The match will be held at RMIT University in District 7, HCMC and teh best on ground shall again receive the Rick Trewavas Medal.

Victory in Cambodian Cup. Return tour on 4 September

BOG Brett Jota at last week's Cambodian Cup

Congratulations to the 35 players and spectators who made the Cambodian Cannon Ball Run to Phnom Penh for the birth of the Cambodian Cobras footy club last weekend. It was a tough match and Vietnam did well to beat a very determined opposition by 84 points.

Congratulations to Brett Jota who was voted Best on Ground and won the Rick Trewavas Medal.

The Cambodian Cobras expect to travel to Saigon on 4 September for a return friendly and then again on 27 November for the regional blockbuster, the Indochina Cup.

Yesterday, Cambodian Cobra’s President, Murray Heath emailed all Asian Presidents to say:

I think it is now safe to announce the official birth of the Cambodian Cobras as a legitimate part of the Aussie Rules scene in this part of the world. A big thank you goes to the Vietnam Swans for helping us get this game off the ground.

The Vietnam Swans are very pleased to welcome the Cambodian Cobras to Asian footy and look forward to hosting them here in Vietnam!

Rick Trewavas says he’s a “very happy” Swannie

As mentioned above, the Rick Trewavas Medal was awarded last weekend to the BOG, Brett Jota. The Club has only just learned that Rick Trewavas has an “aggressive lung cancer”. So, as a tribute to the man who helped establish this Club – and played a role in the development of footy in Indonesia – it was decided to name the BOG medal after him.

Upon learning of the Medal named in his honour last week, Rick wrote to the Vietnam Swans:

I teared up. This means a lot to me particularly in the context of mens’ cancer round in the AFL last week…The more I think on this, the more it becomes a wonderful gesture on the Vietnam Swans part. I shall honk my horn for the Vietnam and Sydney Swans this weekend. You have made a Swannie very happy.

Everyone at the Swannies wishes Rick all the very best and we are thinking of him on and off the track.

2011 ANZAC Friendship Match – Hong Kong Dragons confirm

The Home Page of the Hong Kong Dragons' website

The Vietnam Swans are delighted to announce that the Hong Kong Dragons have accepted our invitation to play in the 2011 ANZAC Friendship Match in Vung Tau. Within 30 minutes of the invitation being sent to the Dragons, we had received a reply from them confirming that the Dragons are “very keen to lock this in”.

The Dragons’ homepage now leads with a story providing full details of the ANZAC Friendship Match.

Two days ago, I received an email from Dick Johnson, a veteran, who is friends with a number of guys who played in the VFL’s (Vietnam Football League’s) 1968 Grand Finals. Dick, now living in Perth, will be in Saigon at the end of September. He will be back again in 2011 for ANZAC Day and the Vietnam Swans ANZAC Friendship Match.

Last week, courtesy of VFL Legend, Stan Middleton, I received an article about the Vung Tau match that appeared in the winter edition of the Vietnam Veterans’ Debrief magazine. Click here to find the link to The Vietnam Swans Inaugural ANZAC Friendship Match 2010. (2010, Article No. 7.)

The ANZAC Friendship Match to be held on 23 April 2011 will be a good one.

Auskick resumes in Saigon

The flyer for Auskick in Saigon which recommences on Sunday 8 August 2010

The Vietnam Swans will resume Auskick sessions in Saigon, commencing at 8am on Sunday morning, 8 August (see attached poster for full details or contact Matt Natalotto.

Count Down to the Big Ones: AFL Grand Final and Asian Champs

  • Seven (7) weeks (25 September) before the Official Vietnam Swans AFL Grand Final Parties in Hanoi and Saigon
  • Ten (10) weeks (16 October) before the Asian Championships, Shanghai, China

Can’t get enough?

Can’t get enough of the Vietnam Swans? We either. Try www.vietnamswans.com and/or Facebook.

Closing thought

Coach Josh reminds us that, in addition to the Heritage Round ANZAC Match, the Swannies have played four international matches this year – and won three.

Clearly, if you’re not honkin’, you’re dreamin’.

Cambodian Daily reviews Swannie’s clash against the Cobras

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 4, 2010

Monday's Cambodian Daily says "Migrating Swans crush Cobras"

Last Saturday, the Swannies had a resounding 84 point victory against the Cambodian Cobras. On Monday 2 August 2010, David Boyle wrote the attached article which appeared in the Cambodian Daily.

“If political history is anything to go by, then an Aussie Rules Footy match between Cambodia and Vietnam should serve up a regional equivalent to the bitter rivalry fought out biannually between Carlton and Collingwood down-under. Though the result of Saturday’s match at Northbridge International School was as unequal as the curtain raiser played in Melbourne between these two famous foes, there was no equivalent hostility between the Cobras and the Swans, who served up an entertaining and well spirited contest.

“The revamped Cambodian Cobras were partaking in their first outing and from the beginning it was clear that, though their intent was genuine, their foot skills were not. Vietnam booted four goals in the first term thanks largely to their midfield dominance spurned by the handy ruck work of Mark Greenshields, hard running from mid fielder Luke Creamer and relentless pressure of small forward, Brett Jota. Cambodia failed to hit the board with a major.

“In the second term…”

The Cambodian Match Report

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 3, 2010

Coach Josh barks out some directions in last month's match against Jakarta while a nervous Jerry looks on

Coach Josh “Pudding” Little prepares the match report for last weekend’s blockbuster in Phnom Penh at which the Swannies won 13.21 (99) to the Cobras’ 1.9 (15)

Fresh off a convincing win against Jakarta, one of the largest Swannies’ touring groups got together for the famous road trip to Cambodia.

Legend has it that the Cambodian trip is not one to be missed and the numbers were stronger than any tour this year with the support coming from Glen Nolan & the Vung Tau Massive.

This game had a greater meaning than just a fun weekend. Vietnam Legend, Rick Trewavas, who played such a strong role in establishing the Club so many years ago, is currently struggling with a long term illness. The boys were determined to play the game for him and just two days beforehand, it was decided that the BOG would be awarded with the inaugural Rick Trewavas Medal.

The trip started off on a Friday afternoon with the team all jumping on our own specially chartered bus to Phnom Penh. Little did we know that we were on a bus that was 50 per cent consumed by cargo that didn’t even belong to the Club! Ah well, that’s Vietnam.

Cambodians, like Vietnamese, also love their footy. As a tribute to Aussie Rules, it is not uncommon for Cambodians to sometimes add an extra stupa to their flag to sympolise a set of goal posts.

After a long drive and some fun travelling games, the team finally arrived in Cambodia and, much to the surprise of many people, the whole team made it through to Cambodia without any issues.

The game kicked off at midday on Saturday with the wind picking up (which always brings rain thanks to our weather man, Willy) it was extremely important that the Swans got off to a strong start. And boy we did! With Duksey leading the side for the first time, it what was easily the best quarter of football that I have ever seen the Swans produce. With the ball being switched around the backline, which was giving the forwardline the ultimate delivery, the Swans hit the board numerous times in the opening term. The class of the backline with Derrin leading the way was proving too much for the Cambodian forwards. Goals to Danny, Timmy, Brett, Sam & Shagga (yes, that’s Shannon Leahy) giving the team the early spark we needed.

Cambodia fired up for the 2nd term and came out a lot harder. To the Swans credit, the boys stood strong and took the hard hits. None harder than Matty Townsend who put his body on the line for the team and received an extremely nasty cut above his eye… just a shame it was a water bottle that cut open his eye and not the opposition. In his defence, the bottle was thrown at him by Larry; he just needed to catch it.

With no goals being scored in the 2nd quarter by either side, the Swans were a bit worried that Cambodia would fancy their chances in the 2nd half and would come out firing. Again the Swans were up to the task with blokes like Brett, the Horn, Nicko & Duksey getting smashed by tackles all day and just proving how strong this Club really is! Finally after many missed shots, the Swans got back on the board and the flood gates started to open a little. Goals to Bushy and Duksey helped the team regain some structure as the Swans started to run away with the game.

The final term started off in dramatic fashion with Cambodia receiving a free kick in front of goal which would finally produce their first and only goal of the match. As they did all day, the backline held their own and were the backbone of the victory. Guys like Dezza, Stu, Sam Conroy, Pete and also, full of beans Richard, held down their opponents all day.

Goals came easily in the last with Brett, Shagga, Kevin and Duksey all getting amongst it. With many great individual performances, it was clearly a team effort from everyone involved in what was one of the Club’s most famous victories. The final margin a whopping 84 points!

With the boys all locked in arms and shouting out the Club song (thanks to Danny for giving us practice in the bus on the way to the ground) it was a result for Rick Trewavas who, we were told, was proud to hear that is was Brett Jotta who took out his award as judged by Glen Nolan and the Vung Tau Massive. Brett was fantastic all day and took plenty of hits but just kept getting up! He hardly wasted a single possession (would of had about 30!) and kicked much needed goals. Not only that, Brett wore footy boots and was quoted after the game “it didn’t feel right”.

The Cambodian boys were fantastic hosts and really impressed with the physical presence on the field and will continue to improve as the club continues to develop. Everyone went back to Murray’s after the game for a BBQ and and some drinks in what was also an interesting battle that took place between Cambodia & Vietnam again.

After the team jumped on the bus (eventually) it was time for the fine session to take place in what was another funny session and the perfect way to cap off a flawless weekend. This was a trip to remember and, surely, up there with some of the great tours in Swannies history. Fun weekend with a convincing win always goes down well!

Thanks to everyone who helped make the weekend so great.

Still to come: Photos of the weekend and a match report that appeared in yesterday’s Phnom Penh Post.

Rick Trewavas’ cousin provides an insight

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 2, 2010

Rick Trewavas' cousin, Bruce, took this photo of Rick in France in 2008

Rick Trewavas’ cousin, Bruce Tamagno, has written to the Vietnam Swans to give us all a bit more of an insight about this passionate Bloods supporter who was the inspiration behind the weekend’s Rick Trewavis Medal.

Dear Vietnam Swans

Years ago my dad and my uncle took me and my cousin to a footy match near Gardenvale where they lived. I made the mistake of asking my uncle:

What team are we barracking for?

And I still remember the absolute bollocking I received:

What… what? he spluttered. South Blody Melbourne  of course!

And so, for the last 60 years I’ve followed poor old South across the suburban wastelands of Melbourne, away from the Lake, up to Sydney and now into Indochina.

My cousin is Rick Trewavas and I have to admit that his passion for the Swans is probably without peer.  I was a Geography teacher and travelled whenever I could, so I frequently visited Rick in Hanoi and, prior to that, in Jakarta where he helped form the Jakarta Garudas (an Indonesian Swan?) (Eds note: The Jakarta Garudas don’t actually exist and never did. Rick clears up the story here).

Anyway, I was so impressed at the idea of awarding the best player (for the Vietnam Swans at the weekend’s match against the Cambodian Cobras in Phnom Penh), the Rick Trewavas Medal, I decided to contact you and provide  a photo of cousin Rick which I took in France two years ago.

I speak with Rick frequently via phone as I am currently in the UK and despite his cancer, he has always been in good spirits, quite open about his condition and determined to fight it as effectively as possible.

Keep up the good work,
and keep on barracking for the Swans.

Cheers
Bruce Tamagno

Rick Trewavas responds to yesterday’s impressive result

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 1, 2010

Barefoot Brett, who won the Rick Trewavas Medal yesterday, against Cambodia, also starred in last month's clash against the Jakarta Bintangs in Saigon.

Yesterday in Phnom Penh, the Vietnam Swans played the Cambodian Cobras and won 13.21. 99 to 1.9. 15. The (Swans) Bloods’ B.O.G., Brett Jota, received the Rick Trewavas Medal. Below, Rick Trewavas shares his thoughts.

Excellent news. That’s one more for the Bloods culture. My congratulations to Brett and the team.

My image of him is a strapping, youngish, clean shaven midfielder, in fine fettle who handled the nut with alacrity, marshalled the troops for structural effectiveness – and who will be taking set shot practice next week!

He has entered the annals of football trivia and I am seriously chuffed to be part of the answer!

I leave you with some Guru Bob (Skilton) wisdom:

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him shake a tag and bomb a a banana from outside 50 on his non-preferred.

And to plagiarise someone, somewhere: There are many things to life other than football – I just can’t think of them.

I will honk my horn.

Best regards and looking forward to some photos for my Bloods’ temple.

Rick
