“Swaconic” sporting moments needed for Swannies’ 2013 Calendar

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 6, 2012

Iconic sporting moments: Left, Muhammad Ali, fighting under that name for the first time, knocks out Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine, USA, to retain the WBC Championship in 1965. Middle, one of the first cases of streaking recorded back in 1974 at an England-France game. Right, Alex Jesaulenko pulls down this mega mark in the 1970 VFL Grand Final.

The Swannies are putting together a 2013 Swaconic Calendar of iconic sporting moments that will be recreated by Swannies players – and we need your help to make it happen!

A victorious Nick Faldo embraces Greg Norman “who bled all over August National” at the Masters in 1996.

Eleven Swaconic photos for eleven months of 2013 will be recreated by Swannies’ Photographer, Mark Stennett  (Mark Stennett Photography) here in Vietnam. The 12th month will be reserved for a montage of entries submitted from overseas where items of Swannies apparel (eg hat, polo shirt etc) are being worn.

So, here’s the deal:

  • Email your favourite iconic sporting photograph to Mark Stennett. If possible, please nominate your preferred Swannie for the photo shoot and state reasons.
  • From the pool of entries, a panel will then decide on eleven successful photos. Then, the twisted minds of the boys will be used to get creative in how to re-enact the photos… and who should be involved.
  • Mark Stennett shall shoot those eleven pictures.
  • Swaconic contributions from outside Vietnam with actors wearing Swannies apparel, are actively encouraged (as well as suggestions for photos to be recreated in Vietnam). These will be used to form a montage for one month in the calendar.

The final calendar shall feature one Swaconic recreated photo per calendar month. The original photo shall be included as an inset together with a brief description. A twelfth month will have a montage of recreated photos submitted by Swannies from outside Vietnam.

The calendar is expected to be released at the Swannies’ 2012 AFL Grand Final Parties in Hanoi and Saigon on 29 September.

Left, John Landy in the 1500 metres final at the 1956 Australian National Championships (prior to the 1956 Olympics) jumps over a fallen Ron Clarke. Landy stopped and doubled back to check on Clarke – before resuming and winning the race. Middle, in 1993, Nicky Winmar responded to racist taunts from the Collingwood crowd at Victoria Park by lifting his jumper and proudly showing the colour of his skin. This action is credited with starting the process towards eradicating racism in the AFL. Right, Shane Warne rattles Mike Gatting and his stumps with “that ball” in the first Test of the 1993 Ashes series, Old Trafford, Manchester.
