Wayne blows bubbles for the Swans in Oz!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 31, 2008

Wayne’s WorldThe rumours are true. It is with great sadness that the Swans’ Blog announces that Wayne “Bubbles” Tinlin has hung up his footy boots in Hanoi and will return to Australia to promote the Vietnam Swans with his lovely wife and two small children. Tomorrow.

Bubbles, famous for his VB singlet and his ability to quabble the Queen’s English like no other, has been an institution in Vietnam for nearly 10 years. Before the Hanoi Swans were born, he was a footy nut. He may also have seen the Hanoi Hawks fly back in 1998??

In 2006 when the Hanoi Swans were courting Saigon with the objective of forming a combined Vietnam Club, Bubbles flew down to Saigon to coach Hanoi in the inaugural Vietnam Derby. As always, Bubbles planning was as intense as it was meticulous. As we packed up our things afterwards, we noticed that the team on the Coach’s whiteboard was unchanged from the beginning of the day!

“I’d love an HJ” - Skipper, come Coach, JD reflects on the beauty of the Whopper at Hungry JacksMeanwhile, another coach and former Captain of the Swans, JD, has also telegraphed the Blog to announce that in the middle of the year he will move to Africa to follow his passion for sport and photography on a tripod.

JD has an even more decorated coaching career than Bubbles winning two of the three games he has coached.

Another already-departed Swans high flyer, when hearing about Bubbles and JD, remarked, “Last person to leave Hanoi has to pay 10 bucks!”.

The Blog is hearin’ him. But the Swans Blog is also hearin’ that the Swans are continually in a state of renewal and regeneration. No chance of us being caught with half a dozen 300-Gamers who all retire on the same weekend. We’re continually culling the old and weak and recruiting the young and strong.

The Swans are on the march in 2008. The footy season officially kicks off on 8 March against the Malaysian Warriors in Kuala Lumpur. In September we have our 2nd Asian Championships in Singapore plus we’re also hosting tours from Singapore, Bali, Malaysia, possibly Jakarta and the Elgar Park Dragons.

The Swans Farewell Footy Club has mastered the delicate art of balancing farewells with the need to field a team.

But back to Bubbles. It has been awwwwwwwesome to be party of Wayne’s World. Good luck back in Brisbane and we’ll miss you long time.

Australia Day Footy around the World

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 30, 2008

World Footy NewsLast Thursday, 24 January 2008, World Footy News ran a story on “Australia Day Footy” around the World. The story included a plug for the Vietnam Swans participation in the Experience Australia Day event in Hanoi:

This Saturday, 26th January is Australia Day, a day that becomes especially important to the many expatriates living away from their home country. Every year there are many parties held around the world to celebrate the day, which inevitably links in with Australian Rules football clubs who celebrate the day with a game or use the occasion as a fund raiser. Other celebrations hold games purely as part of the fun of the day and may provide non Australians at the festivities with their first live taste of the game.

To read the rest of the article, click on the World Footy News link. To read about the day in the Vietnam News and this year being the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam, click on its article, “Countries hail 35 friendly years“.

Swans Steal Show on Australia Day

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 30, 2008

The Hanoi contingent of the Vietnam Swans on Australia DayThe Hanoi contingent of the Vietnam Swans stole the Australia Day Show  last weekend at the Melia Hotel – well, at least according to the Swans Blog.

In other words, more precisely from Ms Hoang Van Anh from Australia Education International, “the event was a great success. I appreciate the Vietnam Swans participation. It attracted lots of attention from the youngsters. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Swans for spending time – especially at the weekend… Hope to be able to work with you in the future”.

Bring it on!

Experience Australia Day – Hanoi, Saturday

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 24, 2008

The Australian Embassy and AEIThis Saturday, 26 January 2008, you will be able to experience Australia Day in  the Grand Ballroom of Hanoi’s Melia Hotel. It starts at 9am and won’t conclude until the day has transformed itself into night.

During the day, the Vietnam Swans will put on their own extravaganza from 1- 3pm in the “Culture Area”. Our presence in the “Culture Area” has been described as ”unprecedented” and ”unheard of”. Our timeslot is sandwiched between the “Making Pavlova” and “Making Lamingtons” time slots. So, there should be a lot of nice smells around.

In the evening, there will be a TV Show, “Explore Day” that will finish at 10pm.

For full details, click on the Australia Day Schedule - and then we’ll see you on the day. Seriously awesome fun.

Movember Money donated for prostate screening

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 3, 2008

Mick Johnston (left), Dr Thang and Dr Judith LadinskyAt the Tri Nations Tournament held in Hanoi in November 2007, the Swans raffled off a 4.5 liter mega bottle of Jim Beam as part of Movember. The footballers and netballers from Vietnam, Thailand and Laos raised 5 million Vietnamese Dong (USD 300). The Swans’ Micky Johnston, explains what was done with the money.

Attached is the photo of the handover of 5,000,000 VND to Dr Judith Ladinsky, Chair of the non-governmental organization, the U.S. Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam and Laos. The money was raised by the Vietnam Swans, Laos Elephants and Thailand Thaigers players, netballers and supporters at JAFA Restaurant (after the Tri Nations Tournament)  towards the funding of prostate screening in Viet Nam. Currently, this is not a program that is conducted regularly, but prostate cancer will become a growing issue as the male demographic of Viet Nam gets older.

The money was handed over at the office of Dr Thang, head of the Institute of Research into HIV, which is one of the many projects funded under Dr Ladinsky’s Committee. Information about a recent award from the Vietnamese Government can be read at http://hanoi.usembassy.gov/pr071207.html

Dr Ladinsky was extremely surprised to receive the money.  Dr. Thang had not told her of the reason for my visit.  Needless to say, the Swans hope to continue to raise funds and Dr Ladinsky looks forward to working with her Committee to commence the prostate screening program.

The Swans review 2007

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 31, 2007

The 2007 sun sets on an impressive year for the Swans2007 was a big year for the Swannies. Below are some of the highlights:

  • - It was the year that Hanoi and Saigon combined to form a national team, the Vietnam Swans.
  • - The Vietnam Swans then made our inaugural appearance at the Asian Championships in Bangkok in July.
  • - Players and officials for our first Asian Champs came from no fewer than 6 countries (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, China, Singapore and Australia) to make it happen.
  • Triple Brownlow Medalist, Bobby Skilton; Triple Premiership Player, Clarke Keating; and member of the SouthMelbourne/Sydney Swans’ Team of the Century, Tony Morwood, individually wrote to the Vietnam Swans in the lead up to the Champs to wish us luck.
  • We commenced a relationship with Sponsor, Jim Beam where they actively used the Swans appearance at the Champs to market their product – ie, they sought genuine business value from the sponsorship (eg Jim Beam promotional posters  that incorporated into the design the Swans appearance at the Champs.)
  • In the lead up to the Champs, we launched the Vietnam Swans Blog which has since had more than 17,000 hits.
  • The guys from Laos who played with us at the Champs – have since gone on to form their own Club, the Laos Elephants.
  • We hosted a Tri Nations Tournament in Hanoi with Laos and Thailand that was combined with the netball. Approximately 200 people attended the after match function.
  • We hosted a match in Saigon against Asian Champs Premiers’ the Hong Kong Dragons.
  • We hosted a derby between Hanoi and Saigon in Saigon.
  • We formed part of Austrade’s Australian Schools Open Day in both Saigon and Hanoi where we used footy to help differentiate the Australian education product. Club Sponsor, QBE Insurance, sponsored 900 Swans hats that were given away to attendees in the two cities.
  • The Vietnam Swans received very generous support from sponsors for their third Grand Final Party in Hanoi and close to 200 people attended.
  • In the lead up to the Grand Final, Vietnam Swans stalwart, Wayne Tinlin, was interviewed by ABC Radio in Australia.
  • The Vietnam Swans ran the 2nd Grand Final Cyclo Parade in Hanoi on the Thursday prior to the Grand Final. A photograph subsequently appeared in Melbourne’s Herald Sun Newspaper and ABC Radio in Adelaide did a live interview with Wayne Bubbles Tinlin.
  • Club NewsThe Swans continued to give back to the community by raising money for an organisation dealing with prostate cancer in Hanoi and also for the Loreto Foundation in Saigon which deals with disadvantaged children. On both occasions we raffled off Jim Beam bottles which were part of the original sponsorship from the Asian Champs.
  • The Swans also gave sporting equipment to the orphanage in Hanoi that we have been associated with.
  • The Swans held our 3rd Annual Golf Day in Melbourne on 29 December.

In many respects, 2007 has been a remarkable year for the Vietnam Swans. Congratulations to all involved – especially those involved with the Asian Champs.

We are now extremely well positioned to have a very strong 2008. For a sneak preview of 2008, tune in to the blog tomorrow – the 1st Day of the New Year.

Swans help raise more for charity

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 12, 2007

The Swans donate some Jim Beam at Spam ChamA couple of weeks ago, JASPAS in Saigon held it’s monthly Spam Cham which involves drinks, nibblies and a raffle. All money raised goes to the Loreto Vietnam Australia Program which is involved in 9 major projects assisting over 3,000 of Vietnam’s neediest children. The program assists disadvantaged, disabled and poor children through education.

Thanks to the Vietnam Swans amazing sponsor, Jim Beam, the Vietnam Swans were able to donate the equivalent of a mega 4.5 litre Jim Beam bottle (6 standard bottles) to the raffle.

Tim, the winner of the Jim Beam and Albin, winner of Movember

The winner of the Jim Beam was Tim who exclaimed, “You Beauty!” – although he later confessed he was actually going for the two cans of Spam… Until that moment, Tim had “never won anything”.

Tim said that he was going to Mui Ne the following weekend with a few friends and his new friend, Jim. He did not expect Jim to make the return trip back to Saigon.

For the record, Albin’s effort at growing a mo for Movember earnt him the title of Mr Movember.

Pacey Stacey runs rings around Angkor Wat

Posted by Vietnam Swans on December 7, 2007

Stacey!Last weekend Pacey Stacey tried one of those fun runs at Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. He had to run 21km.

Not only was he successful in completing the run, he also managed to pulverise the 2 hour barrier. Scott finished in just 1hr and 59 minutes!

There’s a lot to be said for the Swans fitness regime.

Special thanks to Stacey for doing the official timing for himself.

Gus grows the mo

Posted by Vietnam Swans on November 30, 2007

Gus

Swans Captain, Gus McEwin was just one of the boys to grow a mo for Movember and the Tri Nations tournament.

Raising awareness for men’s health issues was the objective and judging from the raised eye brows when people saw the Gustache, it certainly did that.

Thanks to Gus and all the boys who grew mo’s as well as all the people who bought tickets for the Jim Beam raffle. The money raised will be presented shortly to the US Committee for Scientific Research with Vietnam that will introduce prostate screening to one of their programs.

Tri Nations nets millions for charity

Posted by Vietnam Swans on November 28, 2007

Jim Beam - Just the BestAt the recent Tri Nations Footy/Netball weekend, the Swans raised 4.5 million Vietnamese Dong ($US 280) from the raffle of a mega 4.5 litre bottle of Jim Beam (our Club Sponsor).

It was all part of “Movember” where a number of players grew a moustache for the tournament to raise awareness and money for men’s health issues. The money raised will be donated to the US Committee for Scientific Research with Vietnam. Soon, they will commence a primary health care program in the northern highlands and will now add prostate screening and care to the program.

For further details, click on the link to the Swans  ‘Tache n Passion for Charity posting.

For the record, the Tigers’ Chris Thwaiter won the Jim Beam and promptly shared it with the two hundred people who were there on the Saturday night.

Thank you to the Thailand Tigers, Lao Elephants, Vietnam Swans, the various netball teams and friends who all dug deep for this cause.

The ‘tache n passion for charity

Posted by Vietnam Swans on November 15, 2007

Grow the MoAs previously mentioned, this weekend, a number of the players from the Vietnam Swans, Thailand Tigers and Lao Elephants will be sporting new look moustaches. It’s all in the name of “Movember” to raise awareness for men’s health issues back in Australia. We’ll use the weekend’s Tri Nations’ Tournament to raise some money to assist a local charity.

The money will be donated to the The US Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam. They are a non-profit (501 (c) (3)) membership corporation and do not have a religious agenda. The group has ties with The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (dealing with the incidence and prevalence of disease in large populations and with detection of the source and cause of epidemics of infectious disease) and work within the HIV Department.

They are soon commencing a primary health care program in the northern highlands. They will add prostate to the primary screening and care. The program will be at the village level using trained community health workers with physicians from the province level providing back-up and supervision to the Commune Health Workers (CHW’s). They’re doing training for the CHW’s in January.

It is hoped that Dr Bui Duc Thang from the Committee will attend the footy on Saturday to present the medal for Mo of the Match. Meanwhile, Swans’ Sam the Man who has been one of the key promoters of Movember in Vietnam lives in Quang Ngai, Central Vietnam, which has been batterered by typhoons. Yesterday he reported:

“Right now it needs to stop raining in Quang Ngai. Mate, I’ve never seen anything like it – we’ve got floods and landslides like you wouldn’t believe. The road is closed between Quang Ngai and Danang (where the airport is) – best I start swimming to the airport – preparation is the key.”

Good luck Sam in making it to the airport so you can get to Hanoi for the weekend’s Tri Nations!

Netting a Tri Nations Tournament

Posted by Vietnam Swans on November 13, 2007

Tri NationsFancy a souvenir T shirt from this historic and amazing weekend coming up? I’m not surprised.

The netballers have come up with the design to the left to commemorate the weekend. 100 t shirts have been made and will be on sale for $15 with proceeds helping the Oi’s develop netball in Hanoi.

The netballers are an organised lot. They have even produced a Tri Nations’ Netball Flyer which details the times of the Laos, Thailand and Vietnam netball matches as well as their festivities.
