Swans advertise globally

Posted by Vietnam Swans on November 6, 2007

Wide Eyed Tours BrochureThe Vietnam Swans have taken recruitment to a new and unprecedented level. In a bid to boost numbers, we’ve started recruiting travellers before they’ve even arrived in Vietnam!

Together with Wide Eyed Tours, an exciting travel company in Vietnam, we’re advertising in Europe, America and, of course, Australia. Wide Eyed Tours have put together their 2007/08 brochure   and distributed it across the world marketing their tours. On the back page, they’re carrying a complimentary advertisement for the Vietnam Swans inviting travellers to come and join our training sessions when they’re over here.

It won’t be just the Germans who are Wide Eyed when they find out about Aussie Rules in Vietnam!

Saigon farewells Austrade Commissioner

Posted by Vietnam Swans on October 18, 2007

Kev meets the Swans at Austrade’s Australian Schools Open Day, draws a winning ticket in the lead up to the Asian Champs, enjoys sharing the winning feeling with Kerrie

Yesterday, Kevan Dacey who had been the Acting Austrade Commissioner (Saigon) for the previous 6 months, departed Vietnam for Australia for the last time in that position.

Kev first met the Swans when we participated in Austrade’s Australian Schools Open Day back in May. Since then, Kev has become a keen and loyal participant.

When we were raffling mega bottles of Jim Beam to raise money for our Asian Championships campaign, he was there buying tickets for himself and selling tickets to everyone else. When we asked him to draw one of the raffles, he drew his friend Kerrie. Kerrie had won the previous week and kindly donated the bottle back to the Club. Kev drew again and this time drew his own name – and ‘kindly donated the bottle back to the Club’! We didn’t ask Kev to draw any more competitions after that…

Kev spoke with his contacts at M-Gard mouthguards who agreed to sponsor a mouthguard for every Swans player at the Champs. The mouthguards are the best fitting and most comfortable you will ever find.

At the Champs, Kev was everything. Wearing a Brisbane Lions shirt, he ran the water for the Swans. When he tired of that, he pulled on a jumper and played for us against the Thailand Tigers. The following day, wearing a China Reds shirt at the Fines’ Session, he was unexpectedly fined for continually wearing shirts not approved by the Swans hierarchy.

When the Hong Kong Dragons toured to Saigon on 1 September 2007, Kev was there again; this time as goal umpire. In the last quarter, he decided he could offer the Swans more help at full forward rather than as goal umpire. Accordingly, he told the Swans full forward to swap jobs! (See Kev Dacey’s match report.)

Kevan Dacey, you have been a super star. Good luck for your return to Australia. The Vietnam Swans hope to see you again back in Vietnam some time soon – or at the next Asian Champs.

Elgar Park Dragons finish the season

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 8, 2007

Elgar Park Dragons

With all the excitement of the Asian Champs and the unification of  an Australian Rules Footy team in Vietnam, the Swans Blog has unwittingly and regretfully got behind with what our Vietnamese cousins are getting up to back in Australia.

The 2007 Results for the Elgar Park DragonsA quick check of their website reveals that they may have already finished the season. Up to 14 July – when we were in Bangkok for the Champs – the Elgar Park Dragons had won 7 from 12 with another two matches to go (click on the side thumbnail for full results).

The website doesn’t seem to mention the results of the last two games or the ladder and nor does it seem to mention wild celebrations.

Not normally a betting man, I’m tipping that that’s not a good sign for their last two matches or their finals hopes and dreams.

However, as the Vietnam Swans know only too well, setting up a team and a Club can be difficult. Notwithstanding all those initial difficulties, it seems like the Elgar Park Dragons have put up a genuinely stunning performance in their first year. The future would seem very bright for them.

Congratulations to the Dragons.

Rumble in the Jungle

Posted by Vietnam Swans on August 2, 2007

The Laos Elephnats are comingThe Laos Elephants are threatening to tour Vietnam before the end of the year.

Yesterday, Marty Sharples, who put in such a cracking performance for the Swans in Bangkok during the recent Asian Champs, sent us an email with all the hot gos.

Marty says that the Elephants have been “talking a lot about organising a game and the obvious choice is with one of the Vietnamese mobs. As a very preliminary idea, if we were able to get about 15 blokes to Hanoi (or HCMC) around the end of November or beginning of December, what would be the likelihood of a match?”

Deep within this Swan lurks an elephantMarty, the Swans are very surprised to learn that an Elephant can seemingly lurk deep within a Swan. Furthermore, the fact that you guys would then dare to challenge the supremacy of the Swans is simply unheard of.

But anyway, bring it on! Join us on the weekend when we play Thailand (17 November) or any other weekend you choose. It’ll be awwwwwwwwwesome.

Chinese blog knocks off Swans

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 20, 2007

Xu JingleiIn unheard of news, it’s been announced that Ms Xu Jinglei, a former Chinese actress and now director has just become the world’s most widely read blogger notching up 100 million page views in the last 600 days.

This makes her blog even more popular than the Vietnam Swans blog which has recorded more than 1,700 hits in the past 13 days.

According to an article in The Age, Xu “who has a reputation for a high intellect and integrity, has done it without writing about sex or providing a catalogue of kiss and tell stories – but focusing on her work and day to day life.”

Interestingly, these are the hallmarks of the Swans Blog.

Only 99,995,271 hits to catch up to Ms Xu.

In other news, Sex Kitten tells of wild, all-night sex romp on yacht under Harbour Bridge…

The Red & White go Green Mango

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 18, 2007

The UglyIn the space of a few months, we have seen the Vietnam Swans distinctive goal-striped hats in many places worn by the beautiful (the Swanettes at Austrade’s Australian Schools Open Day), the bold (Austrade Commissioner, Kevan Dacey when he left his hat on a table to swim far out to sea to save a seagull) and the ugly (the players at the Asian Champs). (Incidentally, it is surprising that none of the Jim Beam Swanettes have ever been captured on film wearing a Swans hat.)

This Saturday on Cat Ba Island, the extra lucky will be wearing their Swans hat at the Green Mango Resstaurant.

The 2006 AFL Grand Final, HanoiThe Green Mango is a long time supporter of the Swans from Hanoi. They were a Gold Sponsor at our Grand Final event last year. And they also put on a cracking 2nd birthday party where we were very well looked after.

This coming Saturday, the Green Mango celebrates its 3rd birthday. And, if you’re wearing your Swans hat, you will receive 10 x 15,000 VND vouchers (10 x beers) and 10 per cent off the food bill

 Green Mango

It’s 250,000 VND for a 5 course tasting menu, glass of Italian wine, drink specials and door prizes plus your place on the dance floor to “boogie all night”. How good is that?

To reserve your place, contact Mr Hai on 0988 681 208 or email him. For information, check out the Green Mango’s blog.

It’ll be an extra great night for those wearing their Vietnam Swans hat post the Asian Champs.

Congratulations to Wayne “Bubbles” Tinlin!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on July 17, 2007

Wayne Bubbles TinlinThe Swans’ favourite son, Wayne “Bubbles” Tinlin has just announced the birth of his own son, Alexander Thang Long Tinlin!

Bubbles says Alexander is strong and fit weighing in at 4.1 kgs.

The Match Committee of Micky J and Super Sav, seen in the photo above with Bubbles soon after the birth, are still trying to find out Alexander’s height.

The Vietnam Swans wish son, mother and father the very best.

And Pago, as Fine Master, perhaps you should waive Bubbles’ fine for not turning up on tour with the excuse that his lovely wife was about to give birth.

Imagine if you won a mega 4.5 litre bottle of Jim Beam…You wouldn’t be able to reach for your hand phone fast enough! Well, tonight (Friday 15 June), the Saigon chapter of the Vietnam Swans gives you the chance to win one of these megas, thanks to our very generous sponsor, JB, who is Just the Best.

The Swans will be selling opportunities to win this prize at two of Saigon’s finest establishments: the Cafe Latin and the Blue Gecko.

Just the BestEven if you’re unlucky enough not to win the JB, you wont have to wait for another day to be lucky. Already you will have won that special feeling of being part of the Vietnam Swans inaugural assault on the Asian Champs. This truly is a competition where everyone’s a winner.

Santa needn’t stop at Antti’s house this year!

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 13, 2007

Antti, the FinnMr Rooster was able to get in contact with ex Swans player, Antti the Finn. Antti said that he would have been very keen to make it to Vienna for the CEAFL Premiership. Alas, he had already booked a “luxurious weekend next to Archipelago of Turku. Turku is the Paris of Finland… or the ass of Finland depending upon who you ask it from”, he added.

Antti was looking forward to the trip where there “will be some serious vodka drinking, drunken wrestling and passing out to the forest… which is refreshing after busy winter spring”.

Mr Reinout leaves Dead Cat for the last time. And next weekend should also be a beauty as fellow ex Swan, Mr Reinout “from the land of windmills and hash is coming”.

The Finns never sleep! See Antti’s email for more information.

Swans on World Footy News

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 9, 2007

Last week, worldfootynews.com ran a story on the Vietnam Swans entitled “Vietnam starts talking local development”.

The article mentions the Auskick program at the UN International School which Darly Taber and Adam Baird are doing such a mighty job with.  It also mentions the Vietnamese Aussie Elgar Park Dragons footy club and the loose links that it currently has with the Swans.
