Swannies Under 33′s vs Veterans
Posted by Vietnam Swans on February 21, 2014
The phrase ‘it’s on for young and old’ has never rung truer than 2pm this Saturday at RMIT. With the season hotting up and preparations well underway for the Jakarta tour and ANZAC day this game is more than a battle of the ages. It’s a chance for all Swannies to think about where your game needs to be for the upcoming clashes and work towards this.
A few years ago you’d only find a few Swannies qualifying for the Cygnet team (under 33 years old) but the growth of the Swannies in the last year has seen an influx of young blood. That doesn’t mean the old boys are ready to move over. Saturday promises a hard fought hitout with massive bragging rights and reportedly some surprises to be announced by Irish John for the losers.
Both teams have impressive versatility so the prospective match ups truly are just prospective. None the less there are some mouthwatering match ups across the field.
The Cygnets attack boasts a balance of brute and finesse with Timmay and Tra Vy set to be key targets up forward. It wont be easy though as the old boys in defense happen to be the most reliable Swans key defenders.
The middle provides perhaps some of the most fascinating match ups. Swannies midfields have at times failed to convert ruck dominance into centre clearances. The old boys will look to exploit this with Andy Glendinning looking to use all those years of experience to anticipate the taps and get the ball out to the barely qualified old blokes Tim Burdeu and Josh Daly. The Cygnets trio of JR, Potts and Bella will have to use those young legs all day to try and outgun their opponents experience.
Rather than being old and predictable the older forward line could throw up some dynamic challenges for the young defenders. Asian football veterans Horn and GUS have played Asian football since before their opponents were a twinkle in their mothers eye, these mercenaries of Asian Football have played more games each than the entire Cygnets squad but have already shown signs of turning back the clock in 2014. Look for some crafty play from these guys up forward to try and catch out the cygnets comparative inexperience.
* All ages unconfirmed, player availability also not 100% confirmed, please let Billy know if you can/can’t make it on Saturday.
Bring your red and white tops as well as your playing jumper (for team photo) and be there at 1.30 for a good warm up and to get your hands on the ball. 4 x 15 minute quarters to be played.
