Eagles meet Swans in Australia Day Weekend clash, reports Phnom Penh Post

The this week published an article by HS Manjunath about the Australia Day Weekend’s annual clash between the Vietnam Swans and Cambodia Eagles. The article has been reproduced below.

The Cambodian Eagles will kick off their 2014 Aussie Rules Football campaign when they head to Ho Chi Minh City in just under two weeks for the annual Australia Day clash against arch rivals the Vietnam Swans.

The Eagles finished last season with a runner-up berth in November’s Indochine Cup only to go down to the Swans. The loss came after having beaten the Vietnamese at the start of the year in Phnom Penh in the all-important January 26 match.

The Eagles are bracing themselves for a far tougher season this year as the team is in rebuilding mode following the exit of much of last year’s starting line-up.

“We lost a lot of players in the offseason but we welcome some fresh blood into the side who will shore up the team and keep the club running smoothly,” Eagles coach Grant Fitzgerald told the Post yesterday.

“Cambodia and Vietnam have a fantastic rivalry which has seen close, hard-fought matches over the past few years and we are expecting another tough game ahead of us,” added Fitzgerald, a native of Perth who is currently working for local investment company Devenco.

The Eagles-Swans clash is expected to attract a huge crowd and will be the focal point for the Australia Day weekend in Ho Chi Minh City, with food, drinks and Australia-themed activities running alongside the match.

The star attraction of the day, however, will be the presence of Tony Morwood, who is a Sydney Swans Team of the Century member, Hall of Fame inductee and the club’s general manager for business development.

“It is a rare privilege for players and spectators alike to have someone of the stature of Tony Morwood in our midst,” Fitzgerald said.

2014 Asian Champs – 11 October, Clark, Philippines

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 14, 2014

The Singapore Wombats celebrate their Asian Champs victory back in 2011, Bangkok. Which club will win the 2014 Asian Champs in Clark, Philippines, on 11 October?

The President of the Philippine Eagles, Peter Hammon, has just confirmed that the Eagles have been able to secure footy grounds at Clark for the 2014 Asian Champs on 11 October.

So now, the International Cup teams from Japan, China and Indonesia will be able to participate in both events which is seriously good news for football.

Many thanks to Peter and the Philippine Eagles and wider community for shifting the original date from August (which clashed with the International Cup).

Update on Asian Presidents

  • Brendan Cunningham from Thailand Tigers drops the “interim” tag
  • Steve Chapman replaces Paul Simcock as head of the Lao Elephants
  • Cameron Fidler replaces Belly at the Singapore Wombats
  • Shaun Di Gregorio has taken over from Ben Simpson at the Malaysian Warriors

Special thanks to the recently departed Presidents for all their hard work – and we look forward to working with the new Presidents as Asian footy continues to go from strength to strength.

Photos of Annual Golf and Cricket days in Melbourne now available

Posted by Vietnam Swans on January 10, 2014

Photos of the 9th Annual Ryan Jeffery Golf Classic and 7th Annual Cricket day at the MCG are now available.

  • for Golf
  • for Cricket

Below is a report on the golf from Dave “Flyer” Kainey (pictured to side wearing the coveted Red Jacket).

A super day of golf. All players really enjoyed the day, especially the 4 ball best ball format – awesome for Swannies Social Golf.

Runners up in the event were Nick ‘Big Balls’ Shiells, Mark ‘Willy’ Williams, Martin ‘Lurch’ Beecroft and Jamie Quinn, with a net score of 63. The winners comprised of John ‘Cranners’ Cranfield, David ‘Flyer’ Kainey, Bruce ‘Big Bird’ Marshall and Stephen Huybens.

Bruce and The Flyer are Back 2 Back winners of the Jacket.

A massive thanks to the guys who committed to the day. The numbers were little light on but the fresh air shots, balls traveling a half a ball length forward off the tee, duffed shots, sprayed shots, a sprinkling of awesome shots and Willies’ stories ensured a great day was had by all.
