Hot Pies and soaked Swans in GF Replay

Posted by Vietnam Swans on October 3, 2010

Former 1968 Premiership player in the Vietnam Football League, Dick Johnson, at yesterday's AFL Grand Final Replay in Saigon, speaks with Paula

As you may have already heard, the ‘Pies belted the Saints yesterday in the 2010 AFL Grand Final Replay. Collingwood won 108 to St Kilda’s 52.

In Hanoi, the Swannies hosted a Replay Party at JASPAS again. It was another big success with nearly 150 people returning.

In Saigon, we went to a new venue, LesudGaudir. Unfortunately, the weather turned ugly an hour before the kick off which deterred a few people from coming out. Nevertheless, we still had 100 attend – including a man by the name of Dick Johnston.

Dick is a Vietnam Veteran who played in the VFL (Vietnam Football League). In 1968, Dick played in both premiership sides and in one of the Grand Finals, managed to boot 4 of the 10 goals!

The VFL was played in Vung Tau at the Lord Mayor’s Oval – which is the same venue as the Vietnam Swans ANZAC Friendship Match (but now is known as the Dog Track).

Dick has already committed to attending our ANZAC Friendship Match next year which will be played against the Hong Kong Dragons. The match will be played at the Dog Track in Vung Tau on Saturday 23 April, 2011.

The footy in Vietnam has just become a little bit more special.

Back to Business in Saigon:

  • Today at 1.30pm, Auskick at Parklands
  • Today at 2.30pm, Asian Champs footy training at Parklands (just 13 days away)

The Saigon Times: Football final party raises VND40million for kids to swim

Posted by Vietnam Swans on October 3, 2010

The Saigon Times runs an article on the Swannies raising VND40 million for swimming lessons

Last Thursday, the Saigon Times published an article written by Michael Smith, about the Vietnam Swans raising VND 40 million (approx USD2,054) at our Grand Final Parties  in Hanoi and Saigon. The money will be donated to a swimming program in Hoi An. Below is an excerpt from the article.

When the Vietnam Swans held their AFL Grand Final parties last Saturday 25 September) the only winners were the kids in Hoi An who will benefit from the money raised to teach them how to swim.

The Grand Final match was a shock 68-68 draw between the two inner city Melbourne teams, Collingwood and St Kilda, and everybody left feeling as deflated as a flat football. But the kids in Hoi An cleaned up.

The party at La Cantine in HCMC’s District 1 had 242 footy fans and raised VND30 million for the , while the party for the final in Hanoi with 150 attendees raised VND10 million. The swimming program was started because more kids drown in Vietnam than die in road accidents.
