Thai Tiger Spied at Saigon’s Latin

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 17, 2007

Last night at Saigon’s Cafe Latin Bar, a Thai Tiger was spied trying to blend in with the crowd who had turned up to watch the rugby (South Africa Vs Australia) and to look at the 4.5 litre bottle of Jim Beam behind the bar with a Vietnam Swans hat draped over the neck of the bottle.

The Thai Tiger turned out to be former Tiger President, “Robbo”. He denied that he was on a fact finding mission. Nevertheless, if he accidentally bumps into you and discretely starts asking questions about the Swans game plan, be suspicious. Just tell him we’re looking forward to next month and football should be the winner.

Robbo mentioned how extensive the organisation and planning had been for this tournament and that it really had generated considerable interest. So, cliches aside, you can’t help but feel that the Champs are going to be played in a fantastic spirit.

And with us being part of Vietnam’s first National AFL Team, it all sounds pretty exciting.

Dragons down by 2 in a thriller

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 17, 2007

went down by 2pts in a thriller against Oakleigh yesterday. In the first round, the Dragons were stronger to the tune of 21 points. This week, they had a number of injuries to contend with.

Apparently the last quarter was action-packed with the lead changing multiple times. “Mags” ran 70 metres out of the forward pocket to get the ball and ran over an opposition player in the process! And, apparently there was also “drama when the ball hit the post unnoticed by the goal umpire”.

The Final Scores were:

Dragons 12.9.81 def. by Oakleigh 12.11.83

Goalkickers: K. Nguyen 4, H. Vuong 4, B. Nguyen, P. Nguyen, A. Truong, J. Tran

Best Players: K. Nguyen, J. Pi, H. Vuong, A. Le, J. Trang, A. Do

It seems like the Nguyens were in the thick of the action again.

Swans Salvage Some Optus Shame

Posted by Vietnam Swans on June 17, 2007

Disgraceful

Optus Oval with its silly warped roof. Carlton with its disgraced puffing ex President. Yesterday, their footy team received a 100 point pummeling from the resurgent Hawks who dished out another brown & gowwwwwwwwwwwld performance…

It was all looking grim until the Vietnam Swans descended upon Optus Oval this weekend to meet up with Max Sharples, gun recruit for the Swans in Bangers.

Joining Max for a kick of the footy outside Optus were Sri Swaminathan, Micky J, Greg Banova and Dave Rehn. Apologies came in from Josh Magennis, Daniel Hogarth and Chris Canty (no word from the Bar Fly or Ryan).

Even though they were in the home of footy, Max didn’t have one. Greg didn’t have one either as he generously gave his only footy to the Hanoi Swans when he left town…

Anywhere in the world, as always, there seems to be more Swans than footies.

Meanwhile, how can we mention Rehnie’s name without reminiscing about “that” champagne piece of play in Hanoi last year on 25 March against the Jakarta Bintangs… History, of course, has recorded that the Swans went on to win their inaugural victory finishing the match 6.8.44 to the Bintang’s 2.2.14.
